4. Mood Board Analysis
Car Light Photography
Because all of my filming will be done in the Urban landscape of Harrogate Town, I will be filming
lots of things such as buildings, parks and cars. As I want to keep the younger audience interested,
I would like to make it as visually pleasing as possible. I like these images where the car lights of
travelling cars have been left behind, as it gives a busy feeling to the photo, and adds pops of
colour that wouldn’t normally be there. I have always wanted to learn how to create this particular
type of image as well, so it would be interesting to have a go and gain a new skill.
The lights also look slightly futuristic, which could be a good way to contrast how Harrogate has
modernised, and a metaphor for how although time has passed, some of the original landmarks of
Harrogate have remained the same, just like the lights in the image.
Flashback
I really like the idea of using old images taken possibly over a century ago, and
using them to compare how the space has changed, or in the case of this building,
stayed the same. I think this could be a creative and emotive way to show how
much changed has happened over the years in Harrogate, and would be open to
new ways of editing and recording.
I plan to go to these areas, and if possible place the camera in the same spot as
the original Victorian image, and using a fade, see it seemingly transition into 2020
Harrogate.
5. Mood Board Analysis
Time Lapse
Similar to the Car Light Photography, another way to represent time passing
could be to create a time lapse of an area in Harrogate Town Centre. As well
as the Car Light Photography, a time lapse in a bustling city/ town center has
always been something I've wanted to try, and it would be an interesting fit for
the documentary. It will also be an aspect that adds modernity to the video,
and something else to interest the watcher.
Black and White Footage
To show connection between the old Sepia/BW Harrogate, and the present colorized and
modern Harrogate, I will experiment with BW and Sepia colour filters on my own modern
footage. I think this will be a nice way to link the different periods of time I am talking
about, and give the message that although things have changed in some places, the past
will always remain to someone or something.
I plan on using snippets of black and white to show the older periods of time in Harrogate’s
history such as the Victorian and Edwardian periods, a more sepia/ damp colour to show
the mid century period of Harrogate (50’s,60’s,70’s) and normal film colour for me in the
modern times.

Colour Schemes
In these videos filmed between 1949 and the 1960’s
the colour of the film is very oversaturated, a
reflection of the portable cameras at the time. For the
sections where I am talking about mid century topics,
such as the closure of the theatre, I would like to
experiment with colour grading the film I have taken,
and make it look somewhat like this. This will show
the connection between the topic and the time, and
also be an interesting way for me to experiment with
colour.
Photo technology from the Mid
Centuries were still quite new,
and the quality wasn't always
great. Here, we can see that
the images tend to be highly
saturated, and slightly grainy
and blurry. There is either a
lack of colour, replaced with a
sepia tone, or too much colour
that is so saturated it is
different from the original
subject. I will keep this in mind
when recoloring my footage.
This footage has a very rosy look to it, the
walls of the building looking pink, and the
roses looking like a striking red.
Here, the colour green has taken over the
footage, with it having an overall green
hue.
In this clip, the image is more dusty looking, with
blue being the overall tone of the image.
7. Location Scouting
Harrogate Pump Rooms and Museum
• Good for side by side comparison
• Plenty of history to talk about- Mineral Water, Childhood Memories, Side by Side
comparison to modern day
• Easy location to access and safe access.
• Fit with Harrogate's spring/water section
• Good opening shot
Harrogate Tewitt Well on the Stray
• Interesting building to film, possibly using a fish eye lens to connect
with the circular architecture of the building.
• Extremely easy access, safe and can film inside if it starts raining.
• Important historical context (first spring found in Harrogate)
8. Location Scouting
The Stray (Leeds Road/ Prince of Wales Roundabout)
• Where Tewitt Well is found, so easy and smooth access from one area to the
next.
• Aesthetically pleasing area to film.
• Also a historically important place, being there since the late 1700’s.
• Close to a road, so audio might be difficult to hear.
• Shots of the train line easily filmable. Good for filler shots.
Mansfield House
• I plan on talking a lot about the significance the house had in the past (Theatre)
• Easy access.
• Next to a main road so audio may be an issue.
• Someone's private home, so may feel uncomfortable with us filming (Ask for
permission, possibly ask for an interview, if owners know any more history behind
the house.)
9. Location Scouting
The Valley Gardens Pavilions/ Band Stand
• Really good place to film for side by side footage from the 1950’s
• Good for comparisons
• Pretty and recognisable place to film in Harrogate.
• Easy access all times of the year.
• Historical Information
• Also have images from 1900’s to compare too.
The Turkish Baths/ The Royal Baths
• Links in well to the topic of Harrogate being a spa town.
• Historically very important and recognisable to the town.
• Access wont be as easy, and it’s not as visible on the outside as other areas in
Harrogate are.
• Possibility I may be able to film inside (seek permission, however think its closed
due to covid)
• Lots of historical context to talk about- pull of tourism, timeline as a spa, how it
coped with economic crashes ect.
10. Location Scouting
The Cenotaph
• Important landmark in Harrogate
• Remembrance Sunday has been held here every year since the ending of the war-
historical context
• A busy area with lots of people passing through, good place for time-lapse video,
however cars may obstruct the view.
• Have old footage and old photographs almost exactly at this spot, so a good place
for comparison of old Harrogate.
Harrogate Bus Station/ A61
• A good place for filler shots/ establishing shots- shows the connection between
travel, tourism ect
• A good area to maybe film my car light trails, as there are lots of vehicles and
large busses passing through this area- good light show.
11. Location Scouting
Dedicated Statue to Queen Victoria
• Good way to solidify how Harrogate really became its own under the rule of
Victorian Britain
• Good shot to establish and talk about Victorian culture, and how that brought
travellers to the town.
• Nice statue which will be an interesting artifact to film.
• Also have old images to compare to modern day- its changed a lot!
Harrogate Theatre/ Cedar Court Hotel
• Popular tourist spots for decades.
• Both have recorded “ghostly sightings”
• Interesting segment to cover, keep viewers interested, a small break from
the historical context to bring the viewers back down to earth.
• Possibly get footage within the sites, however will need permission, might be
more difficult for Harrogate theatre due to closure.
