The document discusses how the filmmakers attracted their target horror film audience. They conducted research that showed their primary audience was females under 35. They incorporated elements this audience liked, such as a female lead and limited graphic violence. The opening used a stereotypical horror setting and acting to signal to viewers it was a horror genre film. It also employed an enigmatic storyline and reverse chronology to intrigue audiences into watching the entire film.
2. Genre-Horror
We were able to attract our target audience into watching our film because of
the research in which we did. The research told us that our primary target
audiences were females under the age of 35, we then did further research
which told us what our target audience would like to see in our film, this
included a female playing a main role in the film, not a large amount of blood
and gore.
Within our media product there is a strong horror theme running through the
product. We created the horror theme using many different things, such as the
location of the opening, it is a stereo typical horror setting which informed the
target audience that it is a horror film. We also attracted our audience through
the use of actors, the actors we directed to act in a specific way to notify the
audience that it is a horror film.
3. Castings
When casting the actors for our play we had many things to consider. In our film
opening we had to cast 2 different characters, Joel and Bonnie.
Joel: Joel's character needed to look the part of a mentally disabled, homeless man. We
chose to use Rhiannon's Uncle, who looked the part because the opening wouldn’t
have looked as serious if we had used a child as the main actor. We also needed to have
him look like a father which he did very well because he is one. We had to take in the
social class in to consideration, he was in the same social class as our target audience,
which meant they were able to relate to him easily.
Bonnie: Bonnies character had to be a young girl, who symbolized purity. We did this by
dressing her in white clothing, because white is the colour for purity. Bonnies character
had to look like a daughter figure because in the film she was a daughter to Joel.
In our production the fact that the 2 main actors were biologically related meant that it
was easier for them to get into character and also meant that they were more
comfortable together.
4. Storyline
Our story line was very unique, at first it wasn’t easy to understand but once the
ideas kept coming it made it easier. This storyline is one where the audience would
have to watch the whole movie in order to properly understand what is going on
and what is the reason for it. The storyline for our film opening was very enigmatic
as the location was unknown, and the man (Joel) was unknown and people wanted
to know what he was doing there, this made the audience want to watch the whole
film. Our storyline uses reverse chronology because we thought it would attract the
to watch the whole film, this make our film unique because this technique isn't
widely used thought out the industry.
5. Gratification Theory
During our planning and research we considered the Gratification Theory and
when producing our storyboard and script we introduced it in our film opening
in order to make our film better. We tried to make sure our film didn’t only
entertain but to also educate the viewers about all the problems that they had
came across within the film, such as the mental ability/health and problems
which Joel had. Another element we included was social interaction because
the film will have caused members of the audience to start talking about what
occurred during the movie and what they liked and disliked. The audience could
also relate to the film in some manor. The setting and character of our film
meant that there was a sense of escapism, because the audience would be
trying to put the storyline together and work out what is happening.
6. Technical Choices
During the production of our film opening, we had a large amount of different
technical choices to make. One of the major choices was whether to use
diegetic or non-diegetic sound within our film opening. We ended up using
both to allow the audience to establish the genre of the movie easier. We
used music at the start and the end of the opening to add enigma to it and to
build up suspense. Also the use of transactions was another big decision, this
determined whether it is a good movie or a bad one, we used a lot of match
cuts to show the audience that it was a continuous motion in the same
direction and also to show that the film opening flowed. We also decided to
use filters for all the outside shots, we did this because the lighting did not fit
the genre, we concluded that it was too light and bright so we placed a darker
filter over the top.
