Name of Experiment: Preparation of aftershave lotion.
Principle: An aftershave lotion is a clear aqueous ethyl alcohol solution containing perfume.
Actually, the shaving lotion contain 40-60% alcohol and antiseptic emollient, astringent,
perfume etc. The desired balance of mild astringency and coolness is achieved by controlling
the rate of ethyl alcohol and water.
General formula of an after-shave lotion:
➢ Ethyl alcohol- 60%
➢ Propyl alcohol-9%
➢ Water (Demineralized) 96%
➢ Perfume 1%
Various compounds are used in after shaving lotion:
➢ Menthol acts as a flavoring agent and produces a cooling sensation.
➢ Glycerin is used as a humectant that stabilize the foam by preventing evaporation of water.
➢ Alcohol is used as a base EA is a good solvent of skin oil and make the skin dry and whitey.
Apparatus:
1. Mortar with pestle
2. Bottle
3. Beaker
4. Electric balance
5. Pipette

Mortar Formula:
The mortar formulation of an after-shave lotion is stated below-

Working formula:
On laboratory the lotion was prepared as 5 ml solution thus the formulation will be-

Procedure:
1. Peppermint oil was mixed with H2O.
2. Glycerin and ethanol mixed together.
3. Aqueous phase was added to the oil phase with continuous stirring.
4. Then the solution transferred to the desired container.
Precaution:
➢ Properly wash and clean all equipment
➢ Triturate uniformly
Justification of use of lotion:
After shave preparation are intended to cool and refresh the solution, allay irritation, be mildly
astringent and in same instance when soap has been used to neutralize any alkali left on the
skin after shaving.
