2. Process
This is the photo I chose to
use for my album cover and
I thought this was a good
photo as it is clear and
simple, you can also see the
chain, sunglasses and watch
which represents power
and successes and the
which jumper has a
connotation with success
suggesting that he’s really
successful as well as
suggesting that he’s pure
3. Process
I then used the crop tool so that I could
crop my photo down to the size that I
needed it to be (121.92 x 121.92) so tha
it is a square and a suitable size for my
album cover
4. Process
I then used the quick selection
tool so that I could cut out the
main photo
Once I had this cut
out I then copied it
onto a new layer
5. Process
After I had the photo cut out I
then used the photo gallery to
try and make my character
look like a cartoon
I then played around with the
features until I was happy with
how it turned out
6. Process
This is how the photo turned out at first
however I wasn’t too happy with how it
turned out so I kept changing the settings
and experimenting until I found what I was
happy with
7. Process
I then added the Parental explicit content
label on the bottom left of the album
cover as these are quite common on hip-
hop albums due to the explicit language
that they include and they may not be
suitable for younger viewers
I then added this text to the top
left corner and I chose the text to
be Arial and bold and black so it
can be read easily and it is a
mysterious colour suggesting the
album is a mystery and you will
have to buy it to find out what the
album is like
8. Process
I then changed the text so that It
could all fit on one line as I thought
it looked better and makes the
album cover fit into the hip-hop
genre better
I then added a black stroke to
the text to make it look more
bold and so it also stands out
more so that my target audience
can spot the album easier
9. Process
After I added the stroke to the
text I then added a yellow/gold
outer glow to the album cover
so that again it is easier
recognize the album and I
chose the colour gold because
it represents wealth and money
10. Process
I then finally added some hundred
dollar bills into the background as
it shows how rich the rapper is and
this is quite common in this music
genre just to show off how rich
they are
11. To make the back cover of my album cover
I first made the background black by using
the paint bucket tool
and then I used the quick selection tool to
cut out the main image then I put this in a
new layer and again I went into the photo
gallery to give the image a cartoon effect.
I then put this image in the bottom left
corner so that I was able to add the track
list on to the cover without it touching the
image.
12. I then added the barcode to the bottom left as
this is where barcodes as this is where they tend
to be placed on products
I then added some text of what songs would be
on the album however i didn’t like the way it
looked like this so I centred the text and then
moved the text into the centre
13. I first created the Photoshop document to
the correct size for my magazine which was
8.5 inches by 11.5 inches
I then used the quick selection tool so that I
could copy the main image to a new layer
and just have “lil jack” in the photo without
the background
14. I then resized the image to the centre so
that it’s the main image and one of the first
image that customers see when they see
the magazine
I added a masthead called “HIP-HOP
WEEKLY” and this is at the top of the page
to catch the audiences attention as it’s the
name of the magazine. I’ve chosen this
name because it’s a magazine about hip
hop and it is also a weekly magazine
15. I then used this to edit the text and
change the lining space in-between
the words “hip-hop ” and “weekly”
I then added a gradient overlay and
chose the colour red and black
because the colour red suggests love
and passion which in this case is the
love and passion for music and the
black suggests mystery so you don’t
know what is going to be in the
magazine as it’s a mystery. I also
chose the colour black because it’s a
colour harmony that goes well
together
16. I then added the barcode to the bottom
left of the magazine. I've place it here
so that it’s out of the way of the
important things in the magazine
I added the header at the top of the
page and in bold text so that it stands
out and its put as “the new face of hip-
hop” as it’s a hip-hop magazine and this
header will attract my target audience
17. I then chose to add a gradient overlay to the
background and I chose the colours white and
grey as its quite simple.
I then added a drop shadow to the artist to
make him look more powerful
I added the date in the top right corner
and I also added cover lines that are
relevant to hip-hop as it will attract my
target audience. I chose bold font so it
stands out and I also gave it a red glow to
help the cover lines stand out
18. I then added some sell lines to the magazine cover
and these are smaller than the other text as they
aren’t as important as the cover lines are
19. I began by using the paint bucket tool
to make my background black. I then
edited my text and then gave them all
the effects that I wanted to use such as
“Drop Shadow” and “Gradient
Overlay” I chose to use these effects
and other because it stands out to the
audience and it also shows power
from due to the way it look. Another
reason on why I have chose to design
my text like this is because I have seen
similar style text like this on hip-hop
posters which suggests that it is quite
conventional to the genre
20. I then added “LIVE” and I chose to give it a red
and green overlay because red suggests love
and passion for music in this case and green is
often referred to as “the colour of money” and
as well I though the colours went well
together.
Then I edited some
information about the
concert and experimented
with the text and I liked this
because the concert arena
catches your attention the
as its in bold writing
21. I then added in some red bars so make the venue
stand out even more and I added how much the
tickets cost and I chose red font to also make this
stand out
Finally I added some dollar bills to the poster to
show power and success however I didn’t want to
put too much in so I have just kept it simple
however it is still effective and also changed the
text positioning a little bit from where it says
“FIRST DIRECT ARENA” and I also had to changed
the date as I realized that I hadn’t put the B in
“December”
