The document describes the process of designing a magazine cover and contents page. 3. In the beginning of my magazine I
edited the photo, adjusted the
lighting and auto sharpened it, then I
used a font for my masthead and the
colour I wanted. However, I didn’t
like the font nor the colour so I
decided to change it, this is seen on
the photo below.
I changed the font and the colour, the
reason is I wanted a more bold colour
and a font that was quite formal. I
added in a logo so that people would
know what magazine it was without
always having the masthead/title. I also
added in the bar code and logos so that
they could also access it online, showing
convergence.

4. I changed the logos as I wanted it to
look more modern. I also added a
blog called ‘tumblr’ which is well
known for my target audience by
placing these at the bottom I then
have space for my cover lines so it’ll
look organised
I then added the issue number, this is
important because the audience can see
whether they’ve missed or skipped an
issue. This also keeps the magazine
issues in order. The issue number is
placed below the masthead and is the
same font and colour so that it can
easily be seen when they first look at it.

5. I then used Page Plus X5 to add in my
cover lines as this is an easier app than
Photoshop. I have placed two cover lines; I
have used an idiom and placed my bands
name on the side to make it original. I then
used a box out, the same colour as the
font and made it transparent so that the
font could be read.
On the right I have included another cover line, DNCE
is a band which relates to my magazine as they are a
new band in the music industry and I have
mentioned V Festival to try and reel the audience in
as my target audience will mostly be wanting to go.
The exclamation mark is to add excitement and
positivity for both coverlines and I then added
a pug to try and reel people in and get
involved so that they’ll buy the
magazine.

6. I added another cover line to fill the
cover page more, the ‘exclusive’ is
significant as it suggests that it’s
noteworthy. I have colour co-ordinated
the cover lines, the red is the
band/artist and the coverlines are grey,
this makes my cover page organised
and presentable
I then added a freebie which is the ‘free
posters inside’ this persuades the
audience to get it as they’ll be receiving
something free. I again added an
exclamation mark to exaggerate the
other cover lines and make it more
intriguing.

7. As you can see I have moved the freebie and
the pug as I didn’t like where it was
positioned. I then added images so they
could have a sneak peak of what they look
like. I was pleased with where I placed each
of the cover lines as it doesn’t cover the
main image and that the audience can still
see. Underneath I added a small statement
of what my magazine is about, this is just to
inform the audience.

presentable I have kept it simple but
effective as it has cover lines that will
interest my target audience.

9. For my double page spread I chose a
simple background so that my font
can be easy to read, I then added
photos of my and friends for our
band. I used a polaroid template to
make it more appealing and I did this
on photo shop.
I then added an image on the left page, as this is more
of a statement photo; showing our band being
confident and as a group. On the right page I added the
title ‘meet the girls’ as this page will be written about
each of the members and I added a box out so I
incorporated some elements of the cover page onto
the double page. Also, to make it more creative
and attractive I added certain images to
onto the polaroid photos so they don’t
look as bare.

10. I then edited the photo on the right, I
curved the edges, I added our band
name with the same theme colours to
keep it neat and I then inserted some
hearts to make it look less plain so that
it matches the style of the polaroid's. I
inserted my magazine logo in and made
it slightly transparent just to state that
it’s ‘Rising Stars’ magazine.
Not to mention, I put in the page number
to indicate where the reader is at and
copyright on the right of the top polaroid
photo just to show the credit. Then I added
in the article, this is important as it talks
about the band so the audience can be
informed. I used a drop cap at the start so
the reader knows where to start so
that it’s arranged neatly

11. I then added a quote to make it look
better as most magazines have a main
quote. I used the same font from the
title and colour and place it near the
middle of the text box. Making the
quote bigger means that the audience
will look at this quote and it’ll give
them an idea of what the article may be
about
I felt like the quote was too plain and
that it needed a drop box so I inserted
one in, I have still kept the theme
ongoing with the colours and layout.
This is good because if there were too
many colours my magazine would look
cluttered and unorganised. I made sure
to keep my article within the guidelines
so that it’s in order

12. I then added the rest of my article
onto the next page. This then talks
about each of the members so
there’re more than one topic to be
read in the double page spread. I
made sure everything was within the
guidelines so that it’s presentable
and doesn’t look jumbled.
I am happy with the final out come as it looks
neat, presentable, eye catching and bold. I have
kept the same colour theme from my front
cover so you can still identify that it’s Rising
Stars magazine. I have added photo’s to keep it
interesting rather than just a double
page of writing as this won’t appeal to the
audience as it’ll look boring.

14. On my contents page I have inserted
the title for my target audience to
know where they are and I have
included multiple images to make it
eye catching and colourful and my
masthead and logo to keep the
identity and remind the audience
what magazine it is.
I then added stickers to keep the same style as
seen on my double page spread to continue the
scrapbook style. As you can see I carried out the
style I wanted my images to be as seen on my
flat plan in my main task I thought it was an
interesting idea and though it was quite
complex I was pleased with the outcome.

15. I then decided to curve the edges on
the photo instead of having them
sharp. As you can see I have used
some of the images I
thought about putting when I
did my 10 images decision
making.
I changed the colour of the content page as I
wanted to be more creative and mix it up to
make it stand out. I included the page numbers
and aligned them in a certain way so that the
page information would also fit in.

16. I then started inserting the
artists/band on each number to see
how it would look like. I am gradually
building up my contents page and
have kept the same colour as the
page numbers but underlined the
artist so that it can be seen clearly.
I then used the guidelines on Page Plus to align
the titles of the page and then when I was
please I decided to put the page information
underneath the names of the the artists and
made sure it fit within the numbers.

17. I took out the page information
just to see how it would look like
with the artists name so it was
aligned properly so it looks
professional and organised. As you
can see each page is different so it
has a selection of what my target
audience can read.
On the bottom I have added additional
information such as a pug on the right for next
months issue to persuade my target audience
and then inserted convergence links so my
target audience so they can access or contact
the magazine company or be updated with the
latest magazine issues.

18. I have now inserted the page
information below the subheadings
to give my target audience a preview
of what each page will be about so it
will tell them what to expect when
purchasing.
Finally, I made some final changes such as adding more
pages as most magazines have more than 30 and I then
aligned the page numbers, subheadings and page
information to make sure everything is in order and it looks
neat, professional and organised as my target audience will
need to be able to read it.

19. FINAL ADJUSTMENTS MADE

20. I had realised that I need to change the date for
my magazine issue as it was a new year and I had
put in ‘March 2016’ previously. This is vital as it
would look unorganised if I kept the previous date.
I then changed three of my images on my contents
page as it need more of a variety of images and not
just of me and the band. There needed to be a
selection for my target audience to see what other
artists are included in the magazine. I had chose
three other girls that I took photos of and placed
them onto the frame.
For my double page spread I had realised that I had
forgotten to do a drop cap onto the second page to
indicate the reader where to start
reading on the page so I added this in.
