■ An interface device is a hardware or system of components that gives us humans to work together
with laptops/computers, telephone system and any other electrical information system.The general
agreed characteristics delivered by an interface device is often referred to as the user interface. All of
today's desktop and computers have a graphical user interface known as GUI to distinguish it from
earlier, more limited interfaces such as the command line interface CLI .An interface device ordinarily
contains some form of output interface such as an display screen, audio signals and some form of
input interface such as buttons, keyboard, voice receiver.There’s six generic classes of interface
devices that distinguish today's technology e.g. internal and external parts of desktop computers,
memory and external storage, mouse and keyboard. AlsoTelephones and Smartphones are
digital cellular phone with little or no computing, that acceptsWireless Mark-up Language-coded
pages fromWeb server. Ergonomic design is the science of humanising the design of a product.
Human characteristics such as height, hearing, sight, weight, and proportions are taken into account
to optimize an object for human use. Computer devices and connected products are made with an
ergonomic design. Most of these products are used for a long period of time meaning the products
need to be designed for a comfortable use. Products which are made poorly can cause the person
using them may suffer preventable exhaustion, stress, and even injury.

created to tailor to each gaming device and computer system.The main HCI devices which are used today are the gaming console controllers such

better understand how they are designed and why.These devices are all hand based, as they all follow the same conventions of having buttons or

less practical when it comes to carrying out a varied amount of things, as they are more specialized in specific areas, such as exercise video games,
whereas a controller has been tailored to work for the widest amount of functions.This is because when looking at video gaming consoles, you can
see that the interface has been specifically set to function with the consoles controller, making it work well, whereas when new technology is
created such as the Kinect, or PlayStation Move, they cannot fully replace a controller, as they were created after the release of a console, instead
of with it.This means they must be adapted to fit the console, not the other way around. Evidence of this can be seen when looking at theWii.The
Wii was the first console to use motion control for their controllers, but because the motion control was the primary control, it meant theWii was
created with that in mind, and therefore the motion control for theWii is a lot more useful and used more than that of the Xbox's or PlayStation's
motion control, and so the HCI of motion control does vary between systems, and the actual interface devices work better than others because of
this reason. In addition to motion control, there are also other forms of HCI which are also less popular, such as dance mats or game guitars which
are created in order to play specific games, and have little use aside from that.This again is another example of a specialized HCI, allowing players
to fully experience a game and its immersion through unique interfaces and interactivity. However, there are HCI devices which are created not for
entertainment, but for proper accessibility. An example of this would be voice control. While this is not a very popular form of interface due to its
limitations, voice control is still becoming popular, more commonly found within devices such as mobile phones.Voice control can vary in uses,
ranging from telling the phone to search the internet for something, to telling the phone to make appointments, calls, or open applications.While
this is useful at times, its most beneficial aspect to this system is it ability to allow users who may have difficulty using small screens or devices in
general to use things with more ease.This means that less people are restricted by their own physical capabilities.This shows how useful different
HCI devices are, and why there are so many, as it allows for an easier experience when using technology, and doesn't take a genius to be able to use
them.

■ Ergonomic design:The typical HCI devices are Keyboards, Mouse, game controllers have a specific design and
built.This is because it’s important that every device is able to function with the computer, as well as it bring
able to interact with us humans.This is how the name Human-Computer Interface comes into the picture.
Ergonomic design is how a device is made to be used.This can be chosen basically by make use of it, and seeing
that it is so natural to either hold it, or connect with it to accomplish what you have to do on the gadget easily.
This is the reason keyboards and controllers are so mainstream. For example, let’s look at the design of a
PlayStation and Xbox controller over the years they have made controllers that have had some similar traits.

certain games. Xbox One and PS4 controller has been designed so that a player can hold the controllers with

need a desk and mouse mat to work efficiently.This is because the HCI to a device is determined by what its
primary use is. As computers are designed to be used to type up documents and navigate through documents,
using a game controller is less practical, as it would heavily depend on the analog sticks to move through each
option in order to reach the correct button or lay out.Whereas although the mouse and keyboard is much more
clunky and bigger, it requires addition support.As such, gaming is more of an afterthought, and has been
adapted to fit the HCI, as opposed to the gaming consoles whose HCI has been adapted to fit the games.

■ Button configuration can be used for the design for a computer keyboard. The placement of a keyboard is
strongminded by the design of a typewriter as they both serve the same purposes. The letter keys of a keyboard
have been planned to enhance the typing speed by having each letter tactically positioned to make it contented for
the user to type words with two hands. However, is been questionable on how efficient this QWERTY keyboard
layout is, this is because the original idea behind this layout was thought to be to place the most common letters in
the hardest places to reach, so that it could slow people down so that the typewriter's mechanisms wouldn't jam.
Despite this though, the QWERTY keyboard format has become mainstream, and by using this less efficient layout
for computer devices, it still helps in the HCI as it is what people have come to expect.
■ There is another less popular layout which has been created, named the Dvorak layout. The configuration can be
seen on this page.
■ This configuration was created so that the most used letters are positioned in the middle row of the keyboard,
making the hand position less straining, and a quicker typing experience. But due to the QWERTY keyboard been
around for so long, it would be less efficient to use the more efficient design, as we are all used to the configuration
of QWERTY. The button configuration for keyboards are less effective when gaming. The most common keys used
on the keyboard when playing games on the computer are W, A, S, and D. These letters act as the directional pad
equivalent to a controller or the directional keys on the keyboard and a mouse for rotation. Like gaming controllers,
you need two hands for gaming. The reason that this HCI is less than optimal for the keyboard is because if you look
at the position of WASD, while the ASD are all aligned, the W is not aligned with the S key, which would make for a
more comfortable position. This is due to the way the keys are placed for typing, further reiterating how the gaming
HCI for computers is an afterthought. There are perks to gaming on a PC in relation to HCI however, as the vast
amount of keys allows for shortcuts and commands which a controller couldn't replicate. There are even special
gamer specific keyboards which include additional buttons usually located at the top of the keyboard, so that people
may equip specific functions to them within games, while also not effecting the usual HCI for normal computer uses.
The location of the buttons on a controller play a key part in what makes a HCI comfy and stress-free to use. There
are four buttons on the PS4 controller in a plus placement located on the right, and a directional pad which is also
shaped like a plus on the other side. While the Xbox position differs to the ps4 controller. This is that by making the
controllers button configuration symmetrical, as can be seen from the PS4 controller, it makes the position of both
the buttons and d-pad a much better configuration, as it provides a much easier way to control what’s going on in
the games. This is because not only are they placed in the most optimal position for the finger placement, but also
because the 4 buttons and the directional pad are the most used controls, and so by putting these in the most
comfortable place, it means the player will be in this position more than anything else.

■ User centred diagram known as UCD, this is the process where designers use to
improve their products for the marketplace, as this process is where they test
out how well a device is fit for purpose. Development process are taken into
account to form a well-designed final product. In relation to gaming, when
developing a controller, they will use the UCD concepts learnt from previous
designs and how well people interact with the new one in order to make it as
comfortable and useful as possible.Thanks to UCD, research has become
apparent that the best shape for a console relies on motion control. This is
because the controller fits in the player’s hand seamlessly and theWii remote
only needs to fit within one hand.The Wii remote actually gives two examples
on the importance of UCD. Firstly, it shows us how research is important and
how it has a massive effect on the final idea. This is because if you look at the
design for theWii remote, it differs greatly when looking at any other console
controller.The second uses of UCD within theWii controller's design is the strap
that keeps the controller from flying out of your hand. During the first Wii
releases, players experienced issue with holding onto theWii remote and the
controller didn't have any strap for it. Due to UCD, research and feedback made
Nintendo add the strap to the controller, so that when the player drops it, or
lets it go, the remote does not fly across the room and get damaged or cause
damage, but instead remains with the player, hanging from their wrist.

Portability can be seen within mobile, gaming consoles. a handheld gaming console was built for the
purpose to be carried around and to be played on the go.The amount of tech in a home console is
crammed down as small and compact as possible. An example of how HCI improved a console to
bring out its full benefits in portability is the Nintendo DS.The DS has two screens on each and this
would ordinarily take up a lot of room. On the other hand, the DS added two hinges to the device so
that the two screens could fold together. By doing this it saves space by half the size of it, allowing it
to fit within the average pocket like a psp.With the help with UCD Nintendo released a Nintendo 2DS,
which is a more durable cause it had a problem with users snapping the device from the hinges and
has thicker plastic outer shell, in order to adapt the HCI to fit the needs of younger child.

arithmetic and logic operations, which is the addition, subtraction, and shifting operations, as well as Boolean comparisons. ALU is
designed to do mathematical calculations for the CPU that later on allows the CPU to accomplish commands in a language the computer
can understand.

so it needs its own cooling fan in order to keep it functioning smoothly.There are different types of CPU for different types of
computers. Intel andAMD are the most common CPU manufactures that produce different CPU’s with different cores. (Single, Dual and
QuadCore) Single core CPU is the oldest type of CPU.ThisCPU can only do one operation at a time, meaning it’s not good at
multitasking.This explains why computers running speed is directly linked to the procession power of theCPU. DualCore is two CPUs in
one, this means is that the CPU can now run more than one operation and no longer needs to switch between different sets of data
streams. Dual cores can deal with multi-tasking more efficiently. If the DualCore CPU runs fast, then the performance speed of the
computer will run even faster too. Everything has its disadvantages and for the DualCore is that its more expensive .Much like DualCore
is to SingleCore, QuadCore is good for allowing for an even greater multitasking system.The four cored CPU increases the speed of a
computer,While the Quad core is much more expensive, it is very beneficial to those who require many programs opened at once,
especially gamers, as QuadCore is perfect for many games because of their high processing requirements.

Ergonomic design is the science of humanising the design of a product. Human characteristics such as height, hearing, sight, weight, and proportions are taken into account to optimize an object for human use. Evidence of this can be seen when looking at theWii.The Wii was the first console to use motion control for their controllers, but because the motion control was the primary control, it meant theWii was created with that in mind, and therefore the motion control for theWii is a lot more useful and used more than that of the Xbox's or PlayStation's motion control, and so the HCI of motion control does vary between systems, and the actual interface devices work better than others because of this reason. In addition to motion control, there are also other forms of HCI which are also less popular, such as dance mats or game guitars which are created in order to play specific games, and have little use aside from that.This again is another example of a specialized HCI, allowing players to fully experience a game and its immersion through unique interfaces and interactivity. However, there are HCI devices which are created not for entertainment, but for proper accessibility. An example of this would be voice control.
