The document summarizes research on existing magazine products. It analyzes the front covers and double page spreads of magazines about food, festivals, and fashion. Common features identified are mastheads at the top to identify the publisher and use of images and text on double page spreads to engage audiences. The target audiences are generally identified as adult females aged 18-49. Aspects to include in new work are a centered main image on the cover to identify food/festival content and placing text around images for interesting double page spreads. Pastel colors may make content easier to read.
3. Existing Product
In the front cover you can clearly see what is the main subject of the magazine. The attractive
masthead makes it clear that the magazine is about food but specially celebration cakes. By
having the food right in the right side of the paper and the back blurred makes the audience
focus in on the main image; the cake. The setting makes the content of the magazine stand out
which helps the audience know what is the content of the magazine and what to expect from the
magazine; food recipes. I really liked the fonts that they have used in this cover because it fits
with the background and the pastel colours in the image. They used different colours in the cover
lines to draw the audience’s attention to read what is inside of the magazine.
In the layout of this double page spread, the texts are around the plates which is interesting
because it helps the audience know exactly the recipe from each potato jackets. I liked the way
that the plates matches with the background and you can see the texture of the table. The fonts
again are simple but it fits perfectly with the article because it is easy to read. In the recipes they
have given lots of information about the recipe, for example, serves, preparation time and also
the food’s health information. In the media pack shows that the BBC GoodFood Magazine’s
audience is female and the average age is 44. This shows that female are more interested in
reading their food magazine and only 27% of their audience are male who is interested in the
magazine. But this increases in the website where 40% of their audience are male. It also shows
that 75% of their audience is part of the social grades ABC1. The cover is attractive so this helps
to catch the audience’s attention to read the front cover and figure out what is inside of the
magazine. They also might feel interested in buying the magazine because of the cover lines that
is in the magazine cover so that it makes the audience read the content of the magazine.
5. Existing Product
The front cover is quite simple, which enables the audience to quickly understand the
content of the magazine. By having the food as the main image of the magazine and
the recipe’s ingredients on the cover makes the audience knows that the photography
was taken in the kitchen. They used different blobs to make that the magazine look
more interesting. This helps the audience by drawing their attention to what is inside
of the magazine and therefore persuading them to buy it. I think the masthead would
be more attractive if the colour was stronger because the green prevents the buyer
reading it easily. In the double page spread they have an interview with a female chef
who is in the food industry. The colours that they have used in the double page spread
helps the audience to read the article. I really liked the background of the page. The
media kit is quite limited, it didn’t give me their specific audience profile, but it shows
how many people access the website to read the magazine online and how many
subscribers they have. From this I can infer that their products is for female adults that
also have interest in learning how to cook. However, by having a male on the front
covers suggests that the magazines will also appeal to males.
7. Existing Product
In the front cover the main image is covering a bit of the masthead but because it is
from a popular fashion magazine, the audience by looking at the cover they can
already know who is the company. In this magazine they have loads of blobs and stars
which drags the audience’s attention to read and have more interest in buying the
magazine. The colours are quite bland making the celebrity image stand out more that
persuade even more the audience to buy and read it. I think the fonts are simple but it
also matches with the background and also the colours that they used makes the texts
clear to read. The audience might have interest in buying their product because of the
cheap price that is one of the main things that catches the attention when you see the
magazine. The double page spread is giving some tips to the audience to workout
persuading the audience to make some exercises. I think this is interesting because
they gave step by step of how to do each exercise. In this DPS they used simple
colours; black and yellow. The yellow in the background makes the text in the article
stand out so that the audience could focus in the article. The media pack shows that
their target audience is young women between the ages 18 to 49, this suggests that
their products appeals to this audience. I think woman have more interest in buying
this magazine because of the content that is in this magazine, they have more interest
in know about the celebrities. The illustrations in the double page spread also brings
back that the magazine is for women.
8. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
– All the existing products the masthead is in the top of the
magazine to help the audience knows the company of that
specific magazine. In the double page spread they have texts
and image so that could catch the audience’s attention. I think
that they also have in common the audience profile, all
company have adult females audience aged between 18 to 49.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your
own work?
– From the front cover I will put the main image in the centre of
the paper or zoom in so that the audience know that is a food
and festival magazine. In the double page spread I might use the
idea of add the text around the images so that could make the
double page spread interesting to read. I might also use pastel
colours because I think it would make the content easy to read.
