3. PROCESSOR
• The CPU performs arithmetic and makes logical decisions at speeds up to billions of operations per
second.
• Processors are generally defined by their speed, in megahertz (MHz) or in gigahertz (GHz), and
this relates to the number of operations they can perform per second.
4. PRIMARY MEMORY / RAM
• The processor uses this memory to run programs.
• RAM is measured in megabytes (MB). Most modern computers use DDR 2 RAM.
Types of RAM
5. HARD DISK DRIVE / HDD
• The hard drive is the computer’s primary storage area.
• It stores the applications and programs that run on the PC, as well as any work created by users.
• The capacity of the hard drive, measured in gigabytes (GB),
Currently, we can group hard drives into
four types:
1. IDE / Parallel Advanced Technology
Attachment (PATA)
2. Serial ATA (SATA)
3. Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)
4. Solid State Drives (SSD)
Hard Drive Types
6. OPTICAL DRIVES (CD/DVD DRIVES)
• CD R/W drives are standard on PCs and allow the information on a compact disc (either data or
audio) to be read and written.
• It is defined by its speed (i.e., 48x or 48 speed).
• DVD drives can read both CDs and DVDs
1. CD ROM- Compact Disk Read Only Memory drives
2. DVD ROM - Digital Versatile Disk Read Only
Memory drives had greater capacity and
performance than CD
3. Blu – ray -are typically reserved for devices with
high-definition display capabilities, including high-
end computers and the PlayStation 3 video game
console.
4. RW Drives - CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs and Blu-ray
drives come in rewritable drive types.
Optical Drives Types
7. MONITOR
• A computer monitor, technically termed as a visual display unit
• An electronic device that transmits information from the computer onto a screen, thereby acting as an
interface and connecting the viewer with the computer.
• Quality is measured based on resolution
• Screen size is displayed in inches (i.e. 17”)
1. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube)
2. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
3. LED (Light-Emitting Diodes)
Monitor Types
8. GRAPHICS CARD / VIDEO CARD
• These cards are installed inside a PC and are responsible for determining the quality of the visual
(graphics and video) output by the computer.
• They hold their own memory (in MB), which is why
they add to a computer’s capability.
