Question 3: What kind of media institution might distributeyour media product
and why?
I researched two major publishing houses in the UK which are called Time Inc and Bauer
Media. I believe that Bauer Media would be the ideal choice however both are potential
candidates. I believe this at Time Inc seem to appeal to an older audience while Bauer
Media appeals to a younger audience. This is shown due to the quote on Time Inc’s
website which states they “engage almost half of all UK adults” The fact they appeal to
an older audience would not ensure that the magazine would sell. Yet, they publish
NME which can be similar to rock magazines. The target demographic would be for an
older audience which isn’t what I’m hoping for mine. I don’t believe that this publishing
house would benefit my magazine.
The other publishing house I researched was Bauer Media. There were a lot of
advantages to using Bauer Media. In their about section, they stated that their main
focuses are magazines and radio and this is shown through the “300 magazines in 15
countries”. They distribute to 15 countries which means my magazine can be sold
worldwide meaning an international audiences. Bauer Media have brands such as
Kerrang and Q using them as a distributer.
Because they have Kerrang which is the magazine I want to base mine off, it is an
advantage. They also have experience of selling magazines with the similar genre. They
have strong connections with the music industry meaning my magazine will get to high
places.. They have a good reputation with well-known brands such as Heat and Box
meaning they have experience with large brands.
Bauer Media also have links with TV and other media platforms which ensure that my
magazine can be advertised on many media platforms
Therefore, I would choose Bauer Media as the media institution.
