9. After several years of attempting to “fix” schools with technology, a
growing number of techno-skeptics have emerged (see Collins &
Halverson, 2009 ). For example , in 2010 computer pioneer and
visionary Alan Kay said that 30 years of technology in schools had
failed (Cult of Mac, 2010 ). In 2012, Peter J. Stokes said, “The whole
MOOC thing is mass psychosis, people just throwing spaghetti against
the wall to see what sticks”; he was then executive director for
postsecondary innovation at Northeastern University’s College of
Professional Studies (Carlson & Blumenstyk, 2012 , pp. A4– A5).
A U.S. government review of 10 major software products for teaching
algebra, reading, and math found that nine of them did not have
statistically significant effects on test scores (Gabriel & Richtel, 2011 ).
