games in your classroom?
Not at all Quite a lot

23. Why do you use games in
Classroom?
1. Motivate students
2. Review lesson
3. Lower the affective filter
4. Increase student talk time
5. Encourage personal involvement
6. Informally assess the students
7. Allow for fun practice of language
8. ……. (Anything else? Please share in comment.)
24. Board Games
Each board game has its own type of visual
appearance
Spaces contain prompts, or cues, that players
respond to orally when they land on the space
Materials:
Board
Dice
Game pieces (Different for each player)
26. About Board Games
Players must follow the paths shown therein
They must produce orally if they land on a
particular space on the board
The players’ goal is to move ahead as fast as
possible to the Finish space
Each board has a theme requiring to produce
certain types of expressions
27. While Playing … 1
Players need to respond to the prompt by using
their personal experience, imagination,
and/or critical thinking skills to form answers.
Such responses are open-ended, and there is
never one correct answer
While one player is speaking, the other players
should be listening carefully because they are
responsible for remembering the responses
28. While Playing … 2
A player needs to say something new each time
s/he lands on a space
If a player attempts to repeat, the other players
need to recognize and not accept it
Each player gets just one roll of the dice per turn
Time limit for each game is 10-15 minutes
Never write on the game boards
29. Further suggestions…
Better to keep notes by each player using a copy
and pen
Ask teacher for help understanding a word or
phrase, Pause the time for such cases!
Someone can be a referee to say what the
correct answer is, however there is not one
correct answer
Try preparing similar boards even for other
subjects…
30. Suggestions for teachers
Ask students to discuss any spaces they’ve
missed on the board
Give them a new game
Ask them to re-play the game using one of the
recommended variations
Ask them to share any interesting ideas they
heard from their classmates
Encourage them to prepare other boards

35. There are many claims about the benefits of using games in education:
games are a motivator to engage students in exploration and reflection; as
the native language of the digital world, games can reach a younger
generation (the digital natives) more easily; design can help establish
dialogues and break social and cultural boundaries inside and outside of
classroom; and finally game design enables students to develop
knowledge and skills that they need to succeed in the digital world.
Good games are not easy to design and educational games are even more
difficult because of the lack of content and pedagogy knowledge on behalf
of the game companies and the lack of technical ability in educators to
create such application.
Many believe that the commercial game development and instructional
design/training development communities differ greatly with respect to
their fundamental goals (i.e., entertainment versus learning) and processes
involved in design/development (i.e., game development versus
instructional design processes).
