In the scene when Abhi and Amelia say goodbye at the
airport, I added an effect , black and white to show that
the scene was set in the past and to not confuse the
audience because if it was in the same colour as the rest
of the opening, it is possible for them to assume it was the
next shot, where as it was a past scene. I concluded to do
this because in the mystery horror psychological thriller
film, ‘House at the end of the street’, in the opening of the
film is a scene set in the past, showing when the daughter
of a family kills her mother and father but the scene is
dark and no the colour is normal so you therefore cannot
tell that it is from the past until the scene has finished so
it was not a very clear indication that the scene was in the
past so I developed and challenged this by thinking about
how to make our scene more clear that it is set in the past
so I used a black and white effect as in the past, films
were shot in black and white so by seeing the black and
white effect it would remind the audience of the past in
technology when the TV was only played with the colours
black and white.
4. Colour

Also, the black and white effect shows both the negativity
and positivity of the action of Amelia leaving for a business
trip and also leave Abhi all alone to cater for herself. The
colour ‘black’ represents the loneliness for both characters
as they will be by themselves as the colour black is
negative and is quite a single colour as it does not mix with
other colours to create new colours i.e. like yellow and
green create blue but black does not tend to be mixed as it
is only mixed white to create grey but grey is not a
common colour so it is not likely for the colour black to be
mixed which therefore represents loneliness as the colour
stands on its own. Also, the colour black represents the
struggle it must have took for Amelia to be able to leave
Abhi alone on her own and take responsibility for herself
for the first time which would show a big development in
Abhi and Amelia’s mother and daughter
relationship, therefore this will show to the audience that
this is test for their relationship. Also the colour black
suggests ‘danger’ as in horror films the evil characters as
predominately dressed in black as they are capable to do
bad and immoral things which are dangerous e.g. in the
film ‘saw’ as the main character is dressed in a black
tuxedo. The colour black therefore foreshadow a
dangerous and harmful event which could occur.
5. Colour

On the other hand, the colour ‘white’ suggests positive
aspects of Amelia leaving. The colour white represents
freedom which can be shown through the freedom Abhi is
left with by being home alone, the freedom allows her to
take responsibility to be mature and learn how to manage
living on her own for when she gets older and she will not
be living with her mother any more.
However using the effect of black and white could have
been used more effectively if the colours were blurry. This
is because it would make the scene look like it was more in
the past as it would look like something you cannot
remember but is vividly rememberable like a memory
which is set in the past.
6. Lighting
Conventions of Mise en scene
(Colour and Lighting)
In the establishing shot, we used dark lighting to create a
negative and mysterious mood which reflects the events of
the opening. This allows the audience to be prepared for
following negative atmospheric events which will be
included throughout the opening. Also, the dark lighting
could also suggest that there I going to be a dangerous
event that will occur as the dark represents danger as the
most dangerous events occur in the darkness as people get
away with doing bad as they can be more sneaky and hide
in the darkness.
However, we had to add in the effect of darkness which
caused us to do more work and edit so we could have
filmed when it gets dark so we would have had the natural
darkness and the shot would be more darker which would
have made more of a dramatic effect especially if it was
pitch black because when it is pitch black, the characters
would have been put out of their comfort zone, just like in
the horror film Saw, as at night time people are commonly
asleep, so when people are out at night, it would make the
audience curious as to why they are out at that time which
would cause more interaction between the opening and
the audience.
7. Lighting
Conventions of Mise en scene
(Colour and Lighting)
Just like in the horror film ‘Darkness’, in the woods scene
were Abhi is being chased, we could have filmed that at
night time to make the atmosphere more surreal and
frightening as anything could happen in the dark, and we
could have then added lights behind Abhi to make her
stand out amongst the darkness just like in the poster for
the film Darkness, which would show the importance of
Abhi’s character in the opening and also the importance of
Abhi to the evil supernatural villain who is following Abhi.
Also, with the lights behind Abhi, the light could signify
hope for Abhi as light colours represents happiness so it
could suggest that there is a possible way for Abhi to be
safe but she to find and discover it.
8. Body
In the scene when Abhi is in the woods and is looking
around, she is stood tall and her posture is formal. This
shows she is worried that there is something around, e.g.
following her and shows that she is ready in case
something or someone attacks her. By her body language
quite formal it shows that the atmosphere and her feeling
o fear is serious as teenagers usually slouch and have a
‘whatever’ type of mood which is shown through their
posture so as she is not slouching and is standing up tall
it shows she is not being herself and therefore something
must be affecting her. This is similar to the film ‘Cabin at
the end of the woods’ in the image below. This is because
the characters are under danger and they are all stood
tall as they are on edge and worried about what is about
to happen.

9. Body
In the airport scene when Abhi and Amelia say goodbye,
Amelia is stood up straight and formally which could
represent her as a business woman and this is her job
and keeping formal is what her job entails. Furthermore,
as Amelia is still staying in her formal serious business
character whilst she says goodbye to Abhi who is part of
her family, it shows the importance of her job and
emphasises how much Amelia is at risk whiting her job
status.
However, to represent this more clearly to the audience
and show them the importance of her business trip, we
could have had the character of Amelia to have a neutral
facial expression as if she isn’t feeling upset to show how
serious she is when it comes to her work, especially in
that particular time as her job was at risk.

11. Body
In the scene where Abhi is staring at the castle, the
supernatural villain is a little hunched over behind the
character Abhi, this shows that the villain is more
comfortable in this scene over Abhi which shows that the
villain has got control and power over Abhi. This signifies
how throughout the opening the villain has been in
control over Abhi all the time.
However we could have edited the villain character to
make the character blurry which would make the
character look more like a supernatural being as they
would be blurry because they aren’t actually present and
are a spirit.

12. Facial
In the scene located in the woods when Abhi is stood
looking around, she has a shocked expression as her
mouth is neutral and she is predominately looking down
and across and not up which shows she is sad and
uncomfortable as when the villain is around she feels
unsafe and unprotected. This could make the audience
postulate that the villain will always make Abhi feel
unsafe and control which will make the audience want
Amelia, Abhi’s mother, to hurry home. An example of this
neutral expression is used in the horror film ‘’Frayed’’.
However, the female characters neutral expression also
has her jaw dropped face in the film in the image
below, therefore our protagonist Abhi could have had her
mouth opened and dropped so she looks more nervous
just like in the film.
