1. Music Video Final Edit Evaluation
In the first assignment, IG1, was where my pre-production and ideas generation began. I quickly
picked up pre-production skills when coming up with my music ideas generation for my chosen
narrative, concept and performance music videos sampled from YouTube. Also on IG1 I was
introduced on how to correctly analyse music videos. I think I worked relatively fast throughout
this assignment and completed all work on or before the deadline to a sufficient standard. I used
correct terminology throughout this assignment, commenting on different styles of camera
techniques and editing skills.
IG2 was where we had a choice to pick whom we were going to work with in order to shoot the
music video; this was the big difference between this and IG1. This assignment was also where
the pre-production and planning began for our video. We, as a group held short meetings to
generate ideas for the final piece. We also compared our own storyboards and implemented
parts of each to create one final storyboard. In IG1 we also was shown how to correctly piece
risk assessment sheets in which we had to go to the location(s) of our filming and find possible
hazards surrounding the area for health and safety reasons. I think as a team on our practical
work we completed all work to an excellent standard however on some of the theatrical side of
the assignment, e.g. the production schedule we were lacking detail and had to re-visit some of
the work in order for it to be adequate enough to boost our overall grades.
After we finished all of the pre-production to shooting our music video we began the IG3 unit.
Within this unit we had to film and edit our music video and upload it to YouTube. For task 1 in
this assignment we had to photographically document the productionphase of our music video
shoot but however we forgot to take them so we decided after we finished our video we would
go back to all filming locations and mimic us filming the video and then took our pictures which
reluctantly worked well. As a whole my IG3 assignment was done to a fairly good standard, all
our individual music videos were more than exceptional but if I had to go back I’d maybe change
a scene or two or maybe even choose a longer song. Another fault with our video was some of
the scenes were out of focus and/or the lighting was incorrect but we corrected all scenes and
re-shot them to an acceptable standard as a team. After completing my rough edit I noticed a
couple of faults that I went back on and adjusted slightly. For example one of the clips used
needed a finer crop as it ‘dragged’ on that extra split second and it is too noticeable on the video
for me to leave it. I also added a final clip at the end of the music video as a kind of ‘blooper’ to
add more humour and professionalism to my final edit. Also, we re-filmed a few of the clips due
to them being out of focus but on the whole I am pleased with my first edit. I also changed a few
clips to black and white to add a different look throughout.
I am very pleased with the technical quality of my music video and I am surprised how quickly I
picked up on how to use Adobe Premier Pro as at first glance it looks like complex software.
After being taught the basics of Adobe Premier I soon experimented around and eventually
finished my first draft of the music video. After uploading my video to YouTube and receiving
feedback off peers I began to generate new ideas to implement into the final edit. One of my
ideas was to add a black and white effect to the opening and ending scene to give a wider range
of visualises throughout. As mentioned before I also noticed after watching through my rough
edit that some of the clips weren’t a very good cut and as a consequence of this going from scene
to scene some of them looked very amateurish so this was the first error I corrected when
starting on the final edit. Another change we decided to undergo as a group was re-filming
some of the scenes in which the lighting was incorrect or the camera angle/distance or even just
the focus to give our music videos a better finish and more professionalism. Throughout my
final edit you’ll also notice many changes in the speed as I was aiming to go for a fast paced
music video, I did however include one or two slow motioned scenes.
2. If I were to do a music video again I would choose a longer track to design my video around as
the song I chose (Dub PhizixftChimpo&trigga – Gaza) was only a 2:13 track, which as most
music fans would know is a relatively low duration for a song and this didn’t enable me to
implement all my ideas into one as I didn’t have enough space to work with, thus one of the
main reason I went for a fast paced video to try fit as many scenes as I could in that I’d filmed.
The main strengths of my music video is the way I edited the same scene in between other
scenes of waving vinyls( see picture below) which created a good look.
