1. Music Video Final Edit Evaluation
This year our project consisted of researching, planning and finally creating our own music video for
a song of our choice. In the first assignment IG1 I had to research and analyse 3 different styles of
music video; concept, narrative and performance. From doing this I learnt the codes and
conventions of each different type and this gave me ideas of what I would like to do in my music
video. I decided I didn’t want to do a performance based music video at this early stage which made
it possible for me to focus mainly on concept and narrative videos through the rest of the tasks. In
task 2 I created mind maps for each video on MindGenius including information about tempo, lyrics,
target audience, genre, editing, camera techniques and digital effects. These mind maps helped me
to further understand conventions and techniques. For IG1 I also had to produce a budgetshowing
costs of equipment and explain what job roles will be needed and why as well as a script and
proposal showing a basic idea. The work I produced helped me to generate ideas but I believe it
could have been much more detailed which would have helped me more.
The IG2 assignment was the pre-production tasks including story boards, location scouting and
production schedules. At this point we were unsure on our idea and changed locations a lot finally
deciding to make our video in bens house. The story boards we created for our idea turned out to be
very different to our final edit, once we came together as a team we had to put all of our ideas
together and this meant we had to have small group meetings to discuss what we were going to
film. The production schedules we produced were not very detailed as each time we went to film we
were doing very similar things. I understand the importance of checking locations for safety hazards
and found that after doing this task I was noticing hazards that I would not have thought of before.
For the IG3 assignment; Music Video Production we had to shoot our video in the planned locations
as a group. I was in charge of the camera most of the time when recording the footage whilst the
rest of the team were acting, I believe I did this well as the footage was good quality. I gained a lot of
experience from handling the camera so much. Some of the footage that we recorded was out of
focus and the lighting made some of the shots unclear, next time I use the camera I need to learn
how to change the settings properly for more professional looking clips. When we had all of our
footage for the music video I began to edit my music video on Adobe Premier Pro where we could
crop the footage we wanted and place them together with the song, we were able to change the
speed of the clips as well as playing it in reverse. After watching the first rough edit I noticed some
clips that I liked the style of so we went to film more similar footage where we had vinyl’s over our
faces whilst dancing and in the car. Once we had created our final music video we had to go and take
pictures that shown us using the camera, as we didn’t do this whilst filming our clips we were in a
different location while taking these photos. If I make another music video I will make sure to take
photographic evidence at the location we were filming. Once my first edit was done I then added
some effects to the clips on Adobe After Effects, I decided to change the colour of some to get a
night vision look that I have seen on other music videos that I thought worked well.
The software we used to create and edit my video was easy to use after being shown the basics, the
interface was confusing at first as it was very technical but I soon understood how to do what I
wanted with the footage. Next time I use the software I plan to learn new ways of editing the
clipstogether such as fading into the next clip or playing the two clips together for a short time as I
2. used the same technique every time. After seeing some other effects that I could have done on after
effects I would have added a lot more to my final edit if I did it again.
Overall I believe I was successful at creating a music video that suits the song of choice without
following typical conventions, I used fast editing throughout my video as the song was fast pacedand
speeding the clips made the video much better. I think the video would look more professional if all
of the clips were perfectly in time with the song as I noticed that some of them in my edit are slightly
out of time. My favourite part of the video is the shots where our faces are covered by the vinyl’s as
this gives the video its unique theme, this style could be used for many videos from an artist as a
recognizable style.
