Mr. Kong Siong Yung is
currently 30 years old, who is a
civil engineer, working in ICON
CONSULTING ENGINEERS SDN
BHD. He graduated from the
University Science Malaysia in
2009. Right after he graduated,
he got hired by Jurutera
Perunding Alpha Reka as a
junior engineer. He worked
there for about 3 years, then
he started working at Icon
Consulting Engineers Sdn
Bhd at the year 2012 as a
senior engineer. He has 6
years working experience in
construction industry.

PROJECT PROCESS

This project is a 30 stories
apartment located at
Belakong, Cheras and
currently 90% done.
To design an apartment, I
have to focus on the
configuration of apartment
development to use in the
design process and
preparation of project. Then, I
have to identifying the contest
and develop the controls like
primary controls,
building envelopes, building
height, depth and seperation.
Electrical engineer is siting the
development such as public
domain interface , commercial
and public open space, deep
soil zone , visual privacy,
pedestrian access and entries ,
vehicle access and car parking
and extra.
The biggest challenge during this
project is there are some
problem with the concrete grade.
The concrete grade after test is
lower than the expected grade.
After some investigation , we find
out that the main reason is the
ratio of material have slightly
wrong. Ratio of material is very
important as a little mistake may
cause a big problem during
construction.After studying the
problem, we come out with a
solution that is strengten the
concrete. After completion,as a
design engineer i have to prepare
a Borang F for approval of the
design of structure.

Mr. Kong was tasked to work
with architects, town planner
and mechanical engineer. He
was also tasked to construct
the building with a given
design.

PROJECT PROCCESS

For this project, we were
required to build factory
compounds to contain
machines that produces
sulphuric acid.Before we
started the project,we realised
that we had many challenges
to contain machines that
produces sulphuric acid, due
to our lack of knowledge of
factory construction. We had
to do a lot of study about
factory layouts and designs.
Another problem we faced
before construction was that
the soil condition of the site
was too soft. We then came
up with an economical
solution by piling foundation
on top of the soil to ensure a
safe ground.During the
project, we had problems
working with the because all
the manuals were in
mandarin because the
machines were from China.
We had to take our time to
translate and extract as
much information about the

machines as possible. Luckily, one of
my colleagues know how to read
Chinese, he helped out a lot in this
area. After all the problems are
solved, the building is finally close to
completion. At last, the project was
completed after a year and a half.Located at Pahang, Malaysia

Mr. Kong's responsibility and
job scope for this project
was to design 8 compounds
to contain the machines.
Furthermore, he also guided
some junior engineers along
during this project.

design for every machines has

Q: WHAT DO YOU
DO ON A USUAL
DAY?

A: For me, it is very simple, i
just hope that everyone will
be able to own a house. That
is why i am studying and at
the same time researching
on how to build more
effective, more economical
structured houses.
A: I will check my email in the
morning when i reach my
office, after that, i will go out
for meetings, like technical
meetings, client consultant
meetings, site meetings and
more. Then i will be in the
office to do design works,
and also check on some
junior's works.

A: Be more hardworking, and

AMBITION TO BE
AN ENGINEER?
WHY?
A: Yes, i have an uncle who is a
civil engineer, specialising in
transportation. I learnt a lot
about civil engineering. My
brother also studied engineer
and is working as an engineer
now. I was mostly inspired by
them.
