1. Q: What kind of media institution might distribute ‘BEATZ’ magazine?
In the early stages of research, on discovering ‘mixmag’ I learnt that it was published by
‘Development Hell Limited’. In the document, I have previously uploaded titled: Initial Music
Magazine Research, the following quote is written;
“Development Hell ltd. is the distribution company of mixmag magazine. They also produce
mixmagtv, mixmag events, mixmag.net and the world’s No.1 clubbing social network site
dontstayin.com. Their company owns a multimedia platform for mixmag. Because they’re
redound for their expertise in the media, and the respect they’ve had from stars such as
Calvin Harris and Nina Kravis, I’d want to publish my magazine with them because they
have the knowledge and power to get my magazine at the top of my readers list.”
As you can see from the beginning I was certain that this would be the institution to
distribute my magazine today. This belief still stands. Although they don’t produce a range of
music magazines or have any magazines catered to my target audience, I feel as though
‘BEATZ’ could work with ‘development’ to fill this gap in the market. Currently ‘mixmag’ has a
strong readership of over 5 million per week and as a figure that is something to aspire and
potentially conquer with my magazine. I believe the expertise in the genre of club/disco music
will go hand in hand as Pop music often corresponds and works well with this genre as for
example DJ Calvin Harris has recently been frequently mentioned in chart music. And so,
development will have the technical expertise and contacts that could aid in building content
for ‘BEATZ’ mag.
Another attractive aspect about development is that like ‘Immediate media’ (Look back to
initial magazine research) it is a multimedia platform. This would work well for my magazine
because in general young audiences are slowly moving away from the print world of
magazines into the sphere of online digital and film (TV) media. Therefore, connectivity
between the two platforms helps to keep print current as well as boost e-commerce within e-
media. ‘Development’ is better than ‘Immediate media’ at doing this as they own No.1
clubbing social network (dontstayin.com), mixmag.net and mixmagtv. Although‘Immediate’ is
fast growing, familiar with the target audience andhas a readership of over 181 million per month
(not as muchas ‘mixmag’)it doesn’thaveas significant of an impact in the music magazineworld as
‘development’ hasdonewith ‘mixmag’. ‘mixmag’ hasmanagedto expandglobally, andalthough
‘BEATZ’ hasbeen producedfor a young, female audience in the UK in the future, opportunitiessuch
as this wouldbe amazing for the developmentof my magazine. Onthe other hand, ‘Immediate’
publishes ‘TOTP’ magand as they are quitesimilar it’slikely thatthere isn’t a need there for ‘BEATZ’
as well as any businesselements/opportunitiesfor contentwould be prioritised to ‘TOTP’ asnow it is
more establishedthan ‘BEATZ’.
If ‘Development….’ weren’ttoaccept the role of publisher ‘Bauermedia group’ would’vebeenmy
secondchoice. The publisher of ‘MOJO’ and600 othermagazinesas well as 400 TV and radiostations
aroundthe world, with an influence in 17 countrieswould’vebroughta large attentionto the
publicationof ‘BEATZ’. As well as a heavy impact in the media would mean thatthey’re extremely
experienced andwould therefore easily managethe next stages of publication andhouseideas as to
how ‘BEATZ’ couldgrow.
Yet, with all thissuccess sometimeshavingtoo large of a publishercan be a downsideas they already
publish600 magazines- are they willing to take anotherone on?Furthermore, will ‘BEATZ’ be
prioritised as it is a new magazineand they have so many othercurrent magazinesthat they know are
successful-isit worthrisking time, energy andresources into a new magazine thatcould insteadaid in
the enormouspublicationcostsof the other 600 magazines?
In conclusion, as‘BEATZ’ will work with ‘development’ itgives them a chance to developand grow as
a publishingcompany. Furthermore, itmeansthat ‘TOTP’ can receive a competitorto challenge the
quality of their magazineas up until now there hasn’tbeen any. Lastly there are someparallels
between ‘BEATZ’ and ‘mixmag’ thatmean thatthe similarities outweighthe differences.
