Sanganer, a village in the southern
part of Jaipur, Rajasthan.

• The dyers originally came from
Punjab and Sindh and belonged
to a community known as the
‘chippa‘ community.

• It includes all kinds of flower
motifs, the main ones being of
sunflower, roses and narcissus’.
• Apart from flowers, designs
depicting various gods, fruits
and folk scenes are also popular.

• With technology gaining
importance, dyers have started
experimenting with unusual
color combinations. Overlapping
of colors such as like red and
pink, or purple and orange is not
very uncommon nowadays

11. Brigitte Singh
As a Parisian fine art student she
came to India in 1980 to study
miniature painting under the
distinguished scholar and collector
Kumar Sangram Singh. She
married her mentors son,
discovered Sanganer, the hand-
block painting hub of Jaipur.
12. Brigitte Singh became fascinated by
Indian printed textiles and their
influence on 17th Century French
Provencal prints. Her interest in textile
design led to the opening of her studio
in 1984 to create designs using
forgotten Indian motifs, striving to
achieve the high quality of the 18th
Century artisans.
13. She was inspired by Mughal prints and
this led to her conceptualizing Poppy on
Cream which launched her career. It is
permanently on display at the Victoria and
Albert Museum in London.
14. The fabrics are created by traditional block print methods using a master printer
who supervises a team of block printers. A 40 foot length of fabric can take up to a
day to produce. It is a highly skilled process with separate blocks being used for
each different colour, the correct positioning of the block being judged by eye. The
blocks are frequently recurved as splitting or deterioration occurs
overtime. Cot
cotton is the chosen for the fabric.
