INTRODUCTION
My Media Studies Foundation Portfolio preproduction
Task is to research into existing magazine producing
companies. I will research into magazine products that
are published by relevant companies and that are simi-
lar to the one I intend to design and produce. Through
this I will find out: which media companies produce in-
die fashion magazines, the demographics they cater
for, other medias owned by the company, examples of
cross media convergence and subsidiaries. Through
this I will achieve an understanding of the corporations
who publish fashion magazines. By taking notes of
their publication styles and marketing techniques, I will
be able to create a successful indie fashion magazine
which fits in with the publications that existing compa-
nies are publishing.

AN INSIGHT INTO i-D
• i-D is a British bimonthly magazine, dedicated to fashion, music, art
and youth culture.
• i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry
Jones in 1980.
•Magazine is published by Vice Media.
•Target audience - young people interested in fashion and culture
around it.
• The wink and smile on each front cover – a graphic representation
of the magazine’s logo – have become integral to the i-D identity.
• i-D features people in fashion, music, art, clubs, film and every other
creative field, and has prided itself on being the first to scout talents
such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Juergen Teller, Caryn Franklin and Craig
McDean, who all started their careers here. Madonna, Kanye West,
Raf Simons, Karl Lagerfeld, Naomi Campbell, Selena Gomez, and Tom
Ford have all appeared on the cover of i-D magazine.

SUMMARY
Through doing my research into existing media publications I have real-
ized thot global corporations such as Vice Media publish, produce and
own a variety of different media products. Which can be identified by the
similar logo designs used by their companies: such as newspapers and ca-
ble TV companies. They successfully appeal to different target audienc-
es on both mass and niche markets.
Vice Media produces and publishes iconic fashion-oriented magazine
since 2012, which used to be independent beforehand.
Vice Media would be the perfect company to sell my future independent
magazine to since they have the experience and power to successfully
publish and market magazines similar to the one that I intend to design
and produce. They also have knowledge and marketing tools in place to
aim my product to the appropriate target audience.
Vice Media has also started out as an independent, niche magazine,
whereas now they are multi-million dollars corporation with dozens of
media companies operating and broadcasting all over the world.
This concludes that Vice Media is the perfect potential distributor of my
yet-to-be-produced magazine.

Vice Media: A Case Study in Cross-Media Convergence

  • 3. INTRODUCTION My Media Studies Foundation Portfolio preproduction Task is to research into existing magazine producing companies. I will research into magazine products that are published by relevant companies and that are simi- lar to the one I intend to design and produce. Through this I will find out: which media companies produce in- die fashion magazines, the demographics they cater for, other medias owned by the company, examples of cross media convergence and subsidiaries. Through this I will achieve an understanding of the corporations who publish fashion magazines. By taking notes of their publication styles and marketing techniques, I will be able to create a successful indie fashion magazine which fits in with the publications that existing compa- nies are publishing.
  • 5. • i-D is a British bimonthly magazine, dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. • i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980. •Magazine is published by Vice Media. •Target audience - young people interested in fashion and culture around it. • The wink and smile on each front cover – a graphic representation of the magazine’s logo – have become integral to the i-D identity. • i-D features people in fashion, music, art, clubs, film and every other creative field, and has prided itself on being the first to scout talents such as Wolfgang Tillmans, Juergen Teller, Caryn Franklin and Craig McDean, who all started their careers here. Madonna, Kanye West, Raf Simons, Karl Lagerfeld, Naomi Campbell, Selena Gomez, and Tom Ford have all appeared on the cover of i-D magazine. i-DMAGAZINE

SUMMARY Through doing my research into existing media publications I have real- ized thot global corporations such as Vice Media publish, produce and own a variety of different media products. Which can be identified by the similar logo designs used by their companies: such as newspapers and ca- ble TV companies. They successfully appeal to different target audienc- es on both mass and niche markets. Vice Media produces and publishes iconic fashion-oriented magazine since 2012, which used to be independent beforehand. Vice Media would be the perfect company to sell my future independent magazine to since they have the experience and power to successfully publish and market magazines similar to the one that I intend to design and produce. They also have knowledge and marketing tools in place to aim my product to the appropriate target audience. Vice Media has also started out as an independent, niche magazine, whereas now they are multi-million dollars corporation with dozens of media companies operating and broadcasting all over the world. This concludes that Vice Media is the perfect potential distributor of my yet-to-be-produced magazine.
