The document discusses three poster mockups created to receive feedback from a focus group before producing the final film poster. Poster draft one received the most positive feedback. It features photographs of the main characters and a duplicate image of the character Jade. Feedback indicated the duplicate image created intrigue and mystery. Draft two was less successful as the layered photographs did not have the same realistic effect. Draft three received mixed feedback, with some preferring the portrait layout but others finding it overcrowded. Overall, draft one was deemed most appealing to the target audience. The feedback will inform improvements to the final poster.
1. Poster drafts
I decided to produce three poster mock ups to test againsta focus group in order for me to receive feedback
before producingmy final poster. The purposeof this is so that the final poster I produce is suitableand
attracts the target audienceof the film. I will ask the focus group what the firstaspectof each poster they see
is and why, what they likebest about each poster, what genre does the poster convey and would they be
likely to watch the filmafter seeing this poster.
Throughout the three poster drafts I kept the same theme, in all three posters there is a double of the
character ‘Jade’. I decided to do this becausein the filmshe is seen strugglingto reveal her sexuality and
therefore the two pictures indicatethe idea of her havingtwo identities as shekeeps one hidden from her
family and friends. To edit these posters I used Photoshop becauselayers can easily becreated, helpingto
edit one thing at one time, I used the quick selection tool to remove the background, enablingme to have a
double photo on the character Jadeon the poster.

Poster draft one is a landscapeposter which has the original photograph of the three main characters as the
background.A duplicatephotograph of Jade has been layered on top and is positioned in the top righthand
corner, as if she is standing on the top of the hill lookingdown at her own characters. The title‘Jade’ is
positioned atthe top as from my poster analysisin my research I discovered that this is the typical placefor it
to be placed.
Presenting this poster draftto the focus group showed that this poster appeals to the target group as it
received positivecomments from the group. The firstthing that the majority of group noticed about the
poster was the photograph; the three characters were what they were firstdrawn to. They then commented
on how their eyes were drawn to the duplicateimageof Jade standingin the background which intrigued
them as they said thatitcreated mystery and suspicion. After askingthem what genre they though that the
poster was for they suggested thriller becauseof the use of dull colours, somesaid drama with was indicated
by the tagline. The thingthat they liked most about the poster was the taglineand the duplicateof Jade.
Although the taglinewas the favouriteconvention for some people others suggested that the font of tagline
should be changed because it’s difficultto read and as a poster itshould be clear and simpleto be read from
a distance. The focus group liked the font for the title as itwas plain and simplebuteffective, however they
did critiquethe colour of the title as itcould be bolder, they suggested that itshould be white to correspond
with the colour of the releasedate and taglineas itstands out againstthe dull colours.

Poster draft two is a portraitposter which has the original photograph of
the character Jade standingon the top of the hill which shows her
importance as shewould be seen as the protagonistin the film.Layered on
top of the original photograph of the three charcters used as the
background for poster draft one. Again the same idea from poser draft one
was used in this poster of how Jade is positioned behind the three charcters
to showJade’s hidden identity.
After presenting this poster draft to the focus group itshowed that this
poster didn’t appeal as well as poster draft one due to them findingit
harder to understanding. Again the firstthingthat the focus group noticed
about this poster draftwas the duplicateof the character Jade. They said
that it isn’tas effective as poster draftone because the layeringof the two
photographs aren’t as realisticand therefore don’t have the same effect.
The group commented on how the white font of the release date and
credits was effective as itstands outs. Whatgenre the poster implied was
difficultfor the focus group to identify because the brightcolours and
dishearteningtaglinewas contrasting, some found this to be successful asit
created mystery. The focus group said thatthey would be interested in
watchingthe filmbut the poster doesn’t intriguethem as much as other
successful filmposters do.
The feedback from the focus group wasn’t as positiveas I hoped which
implies thatthis poster doesn’t appeal to the target audience, however this
is importantas itshows what to and what not to includein the final poster.
Poster draft three is a portraitposter which has the original photograph of the three
main charcters as the background. The images used for this poster mock up are the
same ones used in poster draft one, the only difference being the shape and
colouring. For this poster the original photograph has been cropped to create a
portraitposter to see if this layoutis more appealingto the target audience.
After presenting this poster draft to the focus group itreceived a mixture of
comments from the group. The group commented on how the characters looked
stretched and were too tall compared to the sizeof the poster. Some of the group
thought that the portraitposter (3) was better than draft one becausehavingit
portraitmakes itlook more professional, however some disagreed to this view as
they thought the portraitlayoutfor this photograph made itlook overcrowded and
cramped. They though that the angleof the camera was clever as itmeant that the
sun created high key lightingover the duplicatephotograph of Jade which created a
spotlight, highlightingher. The feedback for this draftshowed that poster draftone
was more successful and appealingto the target audiencefor the film.

From presenting these poster drafts to the focus group itshowed that draft one was
the most successful showingthatitis the most appealingto the target audience.
However the feedback did providepossibleimprovements to be made for the final
poster and these comments will betaken on board to ensure that the final poster
produced attracts the target audienceand intrigues them to watch the film. Possible
amendments for the final poster included changingthe font of the tagline, the colour
of the title and possibly thetaglineitself to help hinttowards the genre of the film.
