Question two
1. QUESTION TWO:
HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR SHORT
FILM, RADIO TRAILER AND FILM POSTER?
A2 EVALUATION

2. FILM POSTER
For my film poster I really tried to incorporate the dark and intense
feel of the film. From what people have said I seemed to have
achieved this, the dark tone of it means that you cant really see that
much of the photo bar the actors face. Even then the actors face is
covered by a lot of shadow, this connotes that he’s hunting someone.
When on set I managed to get this photo of the antagonist in
preparation for my poster, I really like how threatening he looks it
creates a fear for the viewer before they’ve even seen the film.
The red lettering of the title also connotes danger which is the main
theme of this thriller, it makes the poster seem very creepy.A trick
used by films such as: Jaws, Chucky and Saw. I took a lot of
inspiration from the Jaws poster as it is the poster synonymous with
thriller. As a poster its incredibly effective as it gives a thrilling feel to
it, but keeps the movie mysterious without giving too much away. I
felt the tagline was very good, it implies even more that the movie is
related to family feuds which is the main plot of the film
3. FILM REVIEW
In my film review its hard to replicate the same mysterious and thrilling
feeling like in the poster. I used a picture of the protagonist running up a
well-lit staircase, I took this picture as to spread his shadow up the stairs in
the background. This was to create a feeling that the protagonist was
running away from something or someone. It is a good still from the film as it
gives another look that differs in many ways from the film poster. The film
poster is poorly lit and very mysterious, this is very well lit and reveals
possibly who the antagonist is chasing in the poster. It works well as a review
picture because it’s a still from the most thrilling bit in the film, it gets the
audience excited for the film. For big budget films such as Lord ofThe Rings,
StarWars and Harry Potter they use stills from mid-battle scenes to increase
excitement around the movie. I tried to replicate that by using an exciting
looking picture in an effort to thrill the reader. The review is an important
part of any film, if a review is good it can increase interest and the opposite if
it’s bad.The review includes some facts, plot, cast and crew, this is included
to attract any viewer who are interested in specific actors.
4. MODES OF ADDRESS
With both the magazine and film poster we aimed to address the audience in a
formal way, using the film poster to advertise the cast, crew and feel of the film.
This would attract our target audience as film ‘buffs’ and short film enthusiasts
would appreciate the formal feel from both magazine and film. For the magazine I
went for the professional film magazine look, basing it on Empire andTotal film
who have a very formal look at films coming up.Whereas a tabloid newspaper or a
informal film enthusiasts magazine would attract a different type of audience, the
opposite of who we were aiming for. Both the pictures used in the poster and the
magazine article are a formal still from the movie. This helps keep the distance
between the movie and the audience, which means that when watching they don’t
get distracted and think of the cast as actors rather than their characters. This is a
technique used in the performance industry, keeping distance between audience
and performers prevents the ‘illusion’ from being broken.
5. HOWWOULDTHEY BE INTHE REAL
WORLD?
The poster and film review would work very well in the real world, they include
exactly what the film is trying to show. The film poster uses light and dark to make
it mysterious and thrilling. It uses a tagline to add some information about the film,
whilst using font colour to get over feelings to the audience. Whilst the review gives
another take on the movie by giving some ‘facts’ for the reader and a big exciting
still from the movie in the center. Both mediums are used by big budget films in the
industry as to increase excitement about the film. I feel that the ‘Fathers Day’
poster and review would work well in the “real world” as it gives two looks into the
film. If anyone saw the poster and were interested they could find the review to
discover more about the film. Before creating these I wanted to show how
mysterious the film is, whilst keeping the thriller feel for the reader. I also wanted to
inform as much as possible without spoiling anything, I think I have achieved all
these objectives with the film poster and review.
