1. Planning of film poster
Main image
Mise-en-scene:The main image forthe filmposterwill be the woodlands thisisbecause thisisan
importantandsignificantlocationinthe film.Scenesinthe woodlandsinclude the pointatwhich the
audience firstsee Jade andCaratogetherthisisalsothe pointbefore the climax happensasthe
audience see Jade receive aphone call fromOllybefore theyare toldthattheirmotherhas been
involvedinacar crash.
I tookthree testphotographsof whichcouldbe potential forthe mainimage formy filmposterand
testedthemona focusgroup. The resultsshowed thatphotographs 1and 3 were the most
successful.The feedbackshowedthatphotograph 2 wouldn’tbe successful asitwouldbe difficultto
include anycharacterson the posteras the photographisa longshotof the treesandsky. However
the focusgroup thoughtthat itwas a beautiful photographespeciallybecauseof the lightblue and
hintof orange inthe sky. Feedbackonphotographthree wassuccessful asthe focusgroup
commentedonhowtreesactedas a frame,this impliesthatitwouldbe successfultopositionJade
inthe middle asshe isthe protagonist of the filmandwouldcreate the impressionthatshe is
trapped.Photograph1 receivedmanypositivecommentsfromthe focusgroup,the frostonthe
groundwas commentedona lotas it createsa cold feelingandasense of isolationdue tothe use of
a wide shot. The sun shininginthe toplighthandcornerjuxtaposesthisandcreatesasense of hope.
The sun rays reinforce the pointof hope inthe filmafterJade haswrittenthe lettertoCarol
explaininghersexuality.Fromthe testingthesepotential photographsonthe focusgroupitshould
that photographone wouldbe the mostsuccessful.
Shottype:A wide shotwill be usedasthisallowsthe audience tosee the surroundingenvironment,
thiswill be successful asthe wide shotwill show the emptywoodlandsconnotingisolation.
Connotingisolationwill reflect Jade’sfeelingsduringthe filmasshe feelslostandbelievesthatshe is
not ‘normal’due tohersexuality. FrommyshortfilmposteranalysisinmyresearchIdiscovered
that the majorityof the postersare portraitand thisiscommonlyusedforfilmposters.Usingawide
shotmeansthat the filmposterwill be bestpresentedlandscape, creatingalandscape posterwill be
seenasquite differentthiswillbe effective asitcouldimplythatthe short filmisalsodifferent, this
will intrigue toaudience towatchthe film.
Who: the maincharacters of the film(Jade,OllyandCarol) will be includedonthe filmposter.Jade
will be the mainfocuson the posterandtherefore she will be positionedinthe middle toshow her

Text
Typography:Three differenttypesof fontswill be usedonthe poster. One will be usedforthe title
of the posterwhichwill be ‘JADE’;the fontwill include sharpclearedgestothe letterstolinktothe
genre of drama social realism.Thisfontwill show the seriousnessof the film, whereasif Iuseda font
withcurvededgesitwouldimplytothe audience that it’sacomedy.A differentfontwill be usedfor
the tagline onthe posterto showthat itis differentfromthe title.Forthe creditsatthe bottomof
the postera filmpostercreditfontwill be usedfrompublisherwhichiscalled‘Bodoni MTPoster
Compressed’.Thisfontwill be successful asitwill make the posterlookprofessional, encouraging
the audience towatch the filmasit wouldimplythatthe filmisalsoprofessional andtherefore
successful.
Colour:the colourof the fontwill be a plainandsimple coloursothatit isn’ttoodistractingfromthe
mainimage butboldenoughto attractive the audience.Icreatedfourdifferenttestersforcolours
whichcouldbe potential forthe poster,Ipresentedthesetoa focusgroupof my targetaudience to
see theiropiniononwhich colourismostattractive.The feedbackshowedthatthe focusgroupwere
keenonall 4 coloursused. The greeninparticularwasverypopularas jade isa greengemstone and
therefore the greenreflectsthis. The blue wasalsosuccessful withthe targetgroupasthe colour
blue symbolisestrustandloyaltyandthereforewouldlinktoJade feelingtrustworthyinhermumas
she buildsupthe courage to tell hermotherabouther sexuality.Althoughthe colourblue proved
successful withthe focusgroupIhave decidedthatitwouldn’tbe successful asitwouldblendin
withthe blue skywhichisthe backgroundand therefore wouldn’tstandoutandcatch the
audience’s eye. The plainwhiteandorange were alsopopularwiththe focusgroup, the orange
wouldsymbolisesthe glimpseof hope inJade’slifewhenshe leavesthe letteronCarol’sdeskinher
classroom. The white isplainandsimple buteffective, the colourwhitesymbolisespeace and
innocentagainthiswouldlinktothe glimpse of hope in Jade’slife.
What doesthe textsay? There will be three differenttypesof textsonthe filmposter. The firstpiece
will be the title of the film –‘Jade’thiswill be incapital letterstomake itstandout more and more
likelytocatchthe audiencesattention. The secondpiece of textothe postwill be the tagline;this
will be a piece fromthe voiceoverof Jade’smonologue. The textwill be ‘Keepingasecretshredsyou
to pieces, iteatsyouup inside’.The final pieceof textonthe posterwill be the filmcredits, these
creditswill includethe director, producer, writer, actorandactressand the musicusedin the film.
Layout
The filmposterwill be landscape asitwill fitinwiththe mainimage of the posterbeingawide shot
of the woodlands. The wide shotof the woodlandswillbe the backgroundof the poster, layeredon
top of thiswill be the photographof the three characters. These will be positionedinthe centre of
3. the posterto showtheirimportance asthey’re the maincharactersof the film. The title of the film
will be positionedatthe topof posterasthis will be the firstthingthatthe audience see.The credits
will be positionedatthe bottomof the posteras these are the lessimportantconventionsof the film
posterbutare still required.
