2. Group Dynamics
It is related to the interaction between group members in a
social situation.
The term ”Group Dynamics” describes the way in which
people in a group interact with one another. When dynamics
are positive, the group works well together. When dynamics
are poor, the group’s effectiveness is reduced.
The social process by which people interact and behave in a
group environment is called Group Dynamics. Group
Dynamics involves the influence of personality, power, and
behaviour on the group process.
3. The Group ‘Dynamics’ is derived from a Greek word
which means ‘force’.
Thus Group Dynamics are the forces working in a
group.
Kurt Lewin established the Research centre for Group
Dynamics in 1945.
Many factors in the work environment affect group
behaviour. the two most broad aspects are:-
1.The physical environment, e.g. plants, equipment,
layout.
2.The psycho-social environment, e.g. worker needs,
reward system, work group structure.
4. Type of Group Dynamics
In Organisation, we commonly see two types of groups:
1. Formal Group Dynamics
2. Informal Group Dynamics
1. Formal Group Dynamics:- The purpose of a formal
group is to perform tasks and meet specific targets.
Department, committees and board of directors are a
few example of formal groups organizations.
2. Informal Group Dynamics:- Informal groups are a
result of socio-psychological forces that encourage
people to interact and engage with each other.
5. Group Bond
It refers to ‘Group Cohesiveness’ or ‘sense of
belonging’. It is the force bringing group members
closer. Group Bond may be emotional or task-related.
Emotional Bond:- Derives from the connection that
members feel to other members.
Task-related Bond:- Degree to which group members
share group goals and work together to meet these goals.
The effectiveness of a group can be understood through
Group Bond.
6. Sub-Group
Subgroup means a separate, smaller, and sometimes less
important part of a group
Sub-groups are “subsets of group members who are each
characterized by a unique form or degree of
interdependence”.
Sub-groups are ideal for creating a safe space for all
participants to engage, complete specific tasks, and share.
Formation of sub-groups is natural and sometimes necessary.
Some Example of Subgroups are as follows;- Men and
women are subgroup of society, In a School Boys Girls and
Teacher are Subgroup of School.
7. Group Roles
In a formal group, roles are usually predetermined and
assigned to the members.
Each Role will have specific responsibilities and duties.
There are also emergent roles that evolved naturally to meet
the needs of groups.
Some roles are as follows;-
1. Facilitator
2. Initiator
3. Arbitrator
4. Navigator
5. Coordinator
6. Evaluator
8. CONCLUSION
We have presented a conceptual framework to help
guide, organize, and refine thinking about group
dynamics in social work practice with treatment and
task group
Similarly, task groups such as committee, and board of
director, are not merely collections of individuals.
