Group Dynamics
Define a Group:-
 “A group may be defined as a number of
individuals who join together to achieve a goal.
People join groups to achieve goals that can not be
achieved by them alone”.
(Johnson and Johnson-2006)
Group Dynamics:-
 A branch of social psychology which studies
problems involving the structure of a group.
Group Dynamics conti…
The interactions that influence the attitudes and
behavior of people when they are grouped with others
through either choice or accidental circumstances.
(Dictionary.com)
 Group dynamics is a set of behavioural and
psychological processes that occur within a social
group or between groups. It refers to the "nature of
groups, the laws of their development, and their
interrelations with individuals, other groups, and
larger institutions“.
(Cartwright and Zander, 1968)
Objectives of Group Dynamics
To identify and analyze the social processes that
impact on group development and performance.
To acquire the skills necessary to intervene and
improve individual and group performance in an
organizational context.
To build more successful organizations by applying
techniques that provides positive impact on goal
achievement
Role of Education in managing Group Dynamics
1. Maintains Behaviour:- Each group needs social-
emotional support to be effective. Some members of
the group will take the lead in providing this support
which consists of the following;
a) Encouraging
b) Improving
c) Harmonizing
d) Compromising
e) Standard setting
2. Achieving the Tasks:- Education is the primary
reason for the establishment of a group. To achieve
the tasks , a group must have members that fulfill
some or all of the following roles through education;
a) Initiating
b) Information seeking
c) Information giving
d) Clarifying ideas
e) Bringing Closure
f) Consensus testing
3. Develops self-interest behaviour:- Self interest
behavior displayed by some individuals, members
generally takes away from group performance and
affects task achievement at the expense of the group.
Activities that identify self-interest behavior are as
follows;
a) Dominating and controlling
b) Blocking
c) Manipulating
4. Develops Group Norms:- In the early stages of group
development, a substantial amount of time is spent on
setting social standards and acceptable group behaviour.
These standards are referred to as group norms.
a) Group Norms Loyalty norms e.g. belief.
b) Dress Norms Anything from uniforms…
c) Reward Norms Benefits that come as result.
5. Develops Cohesiveness:- The ultimate role of
Education in groups is to come together as unit and
perform with professionalism and dedication.
6. To Provide appropriate guidance to members of the
group:- Education can provide appropriate guidance to
members of the group for their adjustment. As we know
that Education aims to make socially adjustable citizen of
the country.
7. To improve group relations in the group:- We
can see some particular patterns of relationship
among the members of the group as- stars, isolates,
mutual pairs, chains etc. So Education helps to
improve these group relations in the group.
8. Provides a thorough knowledge of the
interaction process:- As we know that in a group,
we can not find all the members of same qualities,
needs, interests etc. They may be of different socio-
economic background.
Education ascertain positive interaction among the
members and with others.
9. Helps to remove conflicts and stresses in the
group:- As we know that conflicts and stresses in the group,
disturb the climate of the group. Education helps to remove
these disturbances.
As a whole, Education should work to create positive
circumstances in the group which could motivate the members
towards participative and armful leaders. for this kind of
creation one should have a thorough knowledge of group
dynamics which help him in transaction.
