SUSPIROS DE ESPAÑA
(Antonio Álvarez Alonso)
Antonio Álvarez Alonso, nacido en Martos el 11 de marzo de 1867 fue un pianista y compositor y director
de zarzuelas que alcanzó un gran prestigio y reconocimiento en el siglo XIX. Pero, sobre todo, es recordado
por ser el autor de “Suspiros de España”, el pasodoble más famoso de España, que incluso ha sido
reclamado como himno nacional español.
Antonio Álvarez Alonso, huérfano desde muy joven, cursó estudios junto a su hermano en la Escuela
Nacional de Música de Madrid, con maestros como Dámaso Zabalza y Emilio Arrieta y Corera. Su papel
como virtuoso del piano fue discreto, pero sobresalió en la composición de obras musicales. Escribió más de
20 zarzuelas en colaboración con letristas famosos de su época: Antonio Paso Cano, Tomás Rodríguez
Alenza, Eugenio Gullón y Fernández de Terán, Enrique García Álvarez. Residente en Cartagena desde 1897,
permaneció en esta ciudad hasta su muerte que le sobrevino el 22 de junio de 1903.
“Suspiros de España”
El pasadoble “Suspiros de España” fue compuesto en 1902 en Cartagena.
Para muchos exiliados por la Guerra Civil, el pasodoble “Suspiros de España” simbolizó la nostalgia del
país perdido.



Suspiros de España - A. Alvarez - Set of clarinets

  • 1. SUSPIROS DE ESPAÑA (Antonio Álvarez Alonso) Antonio Álvarez Alonso, nacido en Martos el 11 de marzo de 1867 fue un pianista y compositor y director de zarzuelas que alcanzó un gran prestigio y reconocimiento en el siglo XIX. Pero, sobre todo, es recordado por ser el autor de “Suspiros de España”, el pasodoble más famoso de España, que incluso ha sido reclamado como himno nacional español. Antonio Álvarez Alonso, huérfano desde muy joven, cursó estudios junto a su hermano en la Escuela Nacional de Música de Madrid, con maestros como Dámaso Zabalza y Emilio Arrieta y Corera. Su papel como virtuoso del piano fue discreto, pero sobresalió en la composición de obras musicales. Escribió más de 20 zarzuelas en colaboración con letristas famosos de su época: Antonio Paso Cano, Tomás Rodríguez Alenza, Eugenio Gullón y Fernández de Terán, Enrique García Álvarez. Residente en Cartagena desde 1897, permaneció en esta ciudad hasta su muerte que le sobrevino el 22 de junio de 1903. “Suspiros de España” El pasadoble “Suspiros de España” fue compuesto en 1902 en Cartagena. Para muchos exiliados por la Guerra Civil, el pasodoble “Suspiros de España” simbolizó la nostalgia del país perdido.
