1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
Evaluation – Question 3
2. What magazine publishing house might own
your magazine?
I think that in terms of the publishing house, I would choose
Egmont UK Ltd. This is simply because it is the publisher of
the main pop music magazine out on the market at this
moment, ‘We love Pop’. It would be a good idea to share a
similar publishing house for the fact that the magazines
share a lot in common, such as the target audience but may
vary in content. For this reason, the target audience may
consider my magazine in addition to ‘We love pop’ as it could
act as a link to the well established brand. I wouldn’t really
consider other publishing houses such as IPC Publishing,
this is because IPC tends to concentrate on a much older
target audience (such as the NME magazine), and doesn’t
tie in with the specific genre that I am concentrating on.
However, looking in a different perspective, it could be seen
as a gap in IPC publishing that could open new opportunities
and target audiences with my magazine.
Where might your magazine be distributed?
My magazine would be sold at newsagents ect, for the fact that it is the traditional way of selling
magazines so that they are widely available for the target audience to purchase. However, I would
probably split the way my magazine is distributed to allow sales over the internet as well. This is simply
because technology is advancing and new generations spend more and more of their time on specific
devices. Therefore, making my magazine available over apps or online websites would mean that there
would be a higher chance of the target audience coming across it and purchasing the magazine.
3. How frequently will the
magazine be circulated?
Will it be available through
subscription?
The general convention of pop magazines, is that they are released on a monthly basis. However, with my
own music magazine I have decided to subvert this convention, to the point where my magazine would be
released every two months instead. The reason behind this, is that I feel that it would take a longer period of
time in order to gather enough information for the magazine. The pop music magazines out in the market at
this moment are generally released monthly or fortnightly. This is only because they don’t only concentrate
on the musical aspect, but gossip, reviews and guidance as well. Thus meaning that only a small amount of
content has to be about the actual music which doesn’t take a long time to gather.
Like I have mentioned previously, within the distribution
of the magazine. I feel that it may not be as much of a
good idea to make the magazine available through
subscription. Mainly because of the fact that the majority
of the target audience are digitally advanced, and so are
able to view magazines through their phones ect. And
not so much through traditional methods, making
digitalised magazines more popular.
4. What data have you got on magazine sales
in your chosen genre – are magazines in the
pop genre selling well?
According to the ABC Stats, magazines of all genres and focuses have suffered a
decrease in sales in the past year or may have not been 100% paid for. Top of the
Pops magazine received 63483 average sales in the beginning of 2013, yet
managed a 19% decrease. In the same way, We love Pop magazine had 42864
sales, still a 15% decrease from the previous number. Throughout this evaluation
question, I have mentioned this several times. Only for the purpose to stress the
fact that increase in use of digital technology has a large impact. This is seen in the
sales of the magazines, which have decreased over the past year. Simply because
people are now viewing material online rather than buying it from traditional
methods (newsagents)
