1. Magazine Coursework Evaluation
How the aims of the production have been met
Before I started to create my magazine, I wrote a proposal of what would be included inside, I have stuck to
my proposal changing a few things along the way such as the price, initially I set the price at £3.00 and the
social grade bracket was B to C, but I decided to aim my magazine at a higher social bracket and changed it to
A to C1 and increased the price. I have also added extra aspects to my magazine that I had not included in my
proposal, such as that I wanted my magazine to be sold worldwide so I included the price that it would be in
the US and Europe. My target audience has stayed the same and is still aimed at readers and film viewers that
love horror films, and also horror film fanatics.
How the magazine applies appropriate codes and conventions and uses appropriate media language
My magazine applies the appropriate codes and conventions like other typical magazines as it consists of a
front cover with a masthead, main image and sell lines, also there is a contents page which has columns
informing you of what is on each page and finally will have a double page spread which features the main
article, telling you about something different each week involving different actors and films. My magazine
article follows the codes and conventions of a magazine because it is about an up and coming actress in a big
blockbuster horror movie, she talks about how she got into the acting buisness and gives information about
the latest film. Other smaller articles will contain reviews and articles about recent movie awards and other
films that have been released or will be soon, interviews with other actors and directors and competitions that
can be entered. My magazine will feature a different free poster each month depending on the theme of the
magazine and who featured in the main article. My magazine is different compared to the magazines I
analysed because the themes of the magazine are different, for example the font size is a lot larger, this
magazine front cover also has a long shot of the featuring star whilst I have used a close up, but I believe that
this is more effective as you are able to see the stars expression and interpret the emotions that they are
feeling.
How the magazine represents people, places or events
From the front cover, the model is represented in a positive way because she looks quite glamorous with
windswept hair which makes her look like a superstar. The photo used is appealing because of the unusual
makeup that you would not usually see daily because it is bold and dark. The hair is in a ‘controlled mess’ as
the hair coming across her face creates an enigmatic feeling because it makes you wonder if she is hiding
something which could make the reader want to read more. Having the bar of different photos across the
bottom of the front cover shows that she can be seen in many different lights. There are no props featured on
the front cover, I chose not include any because it could detract the attention from the main feature on the
front cover which is the actress from the movie. On the double page spread you would tend to find an article
featuring the model on your front cover, and screenshots or images of them from the movie. The contents
screen does not normally look nice as it has simple fonts so that its quick and easy for the reader to gain
information.
How the magazine would be distributed
The magazine would be distributed monthly because it is a high end, expensive magazine; I have also chosen
that each monthly issue will be released at the end of the month because that is when the majority of people
will get their wages so will have more disposable income and are more likely to purchase it. I have also set up a
‘subscribe’ section where regular readers can buy 12 months worth of the magazine for a discounted price of
£39.99 where as it would originally cost £47.88. I have included the links and names to our twitter and
facebook pages and the official website for the magazine. The price of my magazine is £3.99 because there is
2. more information in this magazine compared to a magazine that is released every fortnight. New, social media
is advertised on the contents page of my magazine such as twitter and facebook as this will attract and appeal
a younger target audience and is a good way of increasing their income by advertising the magazine online for
everyone to see. There is an official website where you will be able to subscribe to yearly and find other
information about the magazine. My magazine will be distributed by Bauer Media Group as they distribute
magazines worldwide, a great way of getting a wider target audience.
What regulations and controls might be applied to the product and how these have been taken into
consideration?
To make sure that I do not cause offence to any readers or the person that I am interviewing, and to make sure
there is no way that the magazine could be sued, the articles would be proof read to make sure that there is
nothing racist or anything that could cause offence. Also the Press Complaints Commission (PCC) is a media
regulatory body which deals with any complaints from the public about the content of a magazine, including
the magazine’s website, my magazine consults with the PCC every now and then to check for anything that
could cause offense and would give us any advice on how it could be less offensive if anything was. But there
will be no offensive content included in my magazine as I have proof read my article and none of the images
included could cause offense.
The strengths and weaknesses of the product in terms of meeting the needs of the audience
The main areas that make my magazine professional are having a big, bold masthead which all successful
magazines have as it attracts readers to look at the magazine. Also having the actress on the front cover
looking straight at the camera can draw in your audience as the reader and the model have eye contact. Also
having basic information such as the date, price and barcode on the front cover informs the reader how often
it is released and they will also know how much each issue will cost. My magazine supports the uses and
gratifications theory because it includes information inside, the information can be extracted from the articles
and review pages. Also the audience will find the magazine entertaining as they will read this in spare time,
and hopefully get enjoyment from reading it. From reading the magazine the audience will be able to gain
personal relationships as it gives them something to talk about with friends or colleagues.
