Geography 300

                        Mileage Map and Conversions Lesson Plan

Objectives: Students will be able to map out the distances of places in their areas (i.e.
Home to school, home to supermarket) in their area and obtain the miles it takes to get
from point A to B. Conversions of mileage to meters and feet will also be used.

Pre-Assessment: The teacher will need to assess the students’ ability to draw a map of
their area as well as obtain mileage.

List of Materials: Paper, colored pencils

Introduction: The teacher will give the students a list of places that they can use for their
map. Questions can be asked to see where the students feel they visit the most, such as
the library, store, or park.

Presentation: The students will be taught the conversions for mile to meter, and meter to
feet. Students will then be given the task of obtaining the mileage from their house to
school, and two other places they frequently visit in their area, such as a park or store.
After getting the mileage, the students will then need to make a map of how they got to
these places on a piece of paper. With their mileage, students will need to find the meters
and feet to each place.

Evaluation: Since the students are mapping out places, and using math to figure out the
distances, the teacher is able to assess the students’ knowledge in both of these areas.
