Editor's Notes
Daniel Middle School will be the newest middle school in the Central Arkansas District located in Conway, AR. This middle school has grades 6th through 8th. The school’s colors are green and white and the mascot is the Mighty Eagle.
You may be wondering, “What is the difference between a middle school and a junior high school?” Here are a few basic points. Middle Schools have teams versus subject departments. In middle schools teachers plan their lessons cooperatively with other teachers on their team in order to link their topics versus planning isolated lesson plans. Middle schools have flexible block schedules that allow an hour and a half for a class versus rigid periods of 40 to 50 minutes. Middle schools also allow for either daily or biweekly advisement of the students versus only receiving guidance from a counselor twice a year.
A school theme is a general idea that is carried throughout the entire building and is reinforced and promoted during the year by all faculty, staff, paraprofessionals, and students. Daniel Middle School will aim to SOAR, Successfully Obtain Academic Responsibility. This theme was created with the idea to encourage and remind students, teachers, faculty, staff, and even parents that we are a team and we have a collective goal. Our collective goal is much more than passing test and meeting standards. S.O.A.R. acknowledges that being involved in education is a duty for us all. We all must be committed to it and to one another. Education is not restricted to letter grades, percentiles, and percentages, but being and learning to become productive citizens, volunteers, and leaders in the classroom and community.
There will be four interdisciplinary teams. The teams are created with the intention to show that Daniel Middle School is a place where everyone works together to make things better in the individual classrooms and throughout the entire school. Students will be grouped on teams according to their chose of one of the main elective activities, which are athletics, visual arts, performing arts, and home economics regardless of grade levels. The team names will be: Gray Eagles (Home Economics), Golden Eagles (Visual Arts), Brown Eagles (Performing Arts), and Black & White Eagles (Athletics). Each team will be composed of students in grades 6th through 8th. Each team will have its own hallway that houses the classrooms for the main four content classes (math, history, science, and English/literature) with a total of four hallways with twelve classrooms each. Each hallway will also have a meeting room. The meeting room will contain a conference table, smart board, and projector that can be used by the teachers and students with consent by the teacher team leader. The school will be designed in a way that encourages a sense of collaboration among students and educators.
There will be one teacher leader for each team. The teacher leader will be the team lead for two years. Every other year there will be an interview process by which a candidate will interview in from of the principal, assistant principal, district superintendent, and the assistant superintendent. The teacher leader will be chosen based on their commitment to education, new and innovative ideas, involvement in the school, and ability to collaborate with others. The teacher leader of the teams will be responsible for conducting meetings with teachers on their team and bringing forth ideas in biweekly meetings with the other team leaders and the school’s principal.
Teachers will be involved in district wide and school wide development conferences throughout the school year. The school wide conferences particularly will be developed and constructed by experts in middle school education. Teachers will be informed of the latest teaching strategies, technological resources, and creative and interesting ways to keep the students intrigued, interested, and involved. The teachers will collectively create, implement, and be challenged to create ideas to enhance student, parent, and faculty relationships, involvement in the community, and tactics for becoming more productive teachers. Teachers will also align their lessons with one another so there is a link in objectives across contents.
There will be an A/B Block schedule. The students will have four classes each day. On A days the students will attend 3 of their core classes and their elective and on B day the students will attend the other 3 core classes and the same elective.
Faculty will teach three class periods a day. Although there are four class periods the elective period will be used as the teacher’s planning period and the advisory period will be used as a team planning period.
All students will take 6 core courses. The Courses will be aligned with grade level, but not limited to grade level. Students will be placed in classes passed on test performance and recommendations from their previous content teachers. Students could possibly be in regular or advanced classes in mathematics, English/literature, science, and history.
Students can participate in a plethora of different extracurricular activities. These activities will take place after school hours, but will add to the students’ social and cognitive abilities.
Next, we have the Daniel Middle School’s Service-Learning Project which is in conjunction with the Faulkner County Habitat for Humanity.
All 6th grade students, transfer students, and any faculty that would like will be involved. Each team will have an opportunity to participate one Saturday each month of their alternating month. The teams will participate two months out of the school year. Charles Daniel Middle school will have a service-learning project that will take place all school term. The purpose of the service-learning project has two goals: to interconnect involvement in the community with classroom content and to begin to instill a sense of humanitarianism and selflessness in each student. The projects will we be a collaborative effort of all teams and the 6th grade and transfer students. The students will volunteer with the Faulkner County Habitat of Humanity.
The recipients of the work will be families who lost their homes during the 2014 tornadoes that destroyed many homes in Faulkner County, particularly Mayflower. The purpose of the service-learning is to help and enhance the lives of victims of the 2014 tornado.
This project can be intertwined with math, health, and English/literature. The students will incorporate area, perimeter, and scale drawings into the project. They will also be informed on safety precautions and home necessities. At the conclusion of the project the students will write reports on their experience with the service-learning projects.
Students must receive parent permission in order to participate in this particular project. Students and parents will be provided a schedule for project dates. Students will also learn and/or review how to analyze and convert scale drawings and safety precautions. Students will be reminded the week of their upcoming participation date for the project. Transportation from the school to the project site will be provided by the school district. Attendance will be taken once the students arrive at the sight for both safety and participation reasons. The team will be divided into subgroups (by grades) in order to work on multiple housing projects at once. Students will be introduced to the head of the project and given the appropriate safety gear and instructions. Students will work from 8 o’clock am until 3:30pm and lunch will be provided. At the end of the school year when the collaboration with Habitats for Humanity is complete, all students will write a paper in their English/Literature class. Their papers will be about what they learned, what they liked, what they disliked, and suggestions for future service-learning projects.
In order for the project to sustain over time I believe an incentive is needed for the students and the teams. The incentive for the students that participate in both of their scheduled dates will be a pizza party during lunch. The incentive for the team that averages the most student participation will be given a trophy that will available for the winner for the following years.
Students will be evaluated through a summative assessment, which is an evaluation of participants that summarizes their development at a particular time. At the end of the school term and the completion of the project the students will be evaluated on their attendance, performance, and written reports on their experience.
