2. The Questionnaire
• I created a questionnaire on Survey Monkey so that I could get the
opinions of other people who would be the audience for the music
video. By doing this, I can make the video suit the desires of the
audience in regards to the performer/actor, colouring and lighting,
settings etc.
• I needed to advertise the questionnaire so that I could get as many
answers as possible, making it accurate. Do to this, I have posted a
link and explanation to my Facebook and personal Tumblr
encouraging my followers/friends to answer the questions.
6. All of the people who answered my survey were female. This could mean there is some
bias in the answers, and the opinions will be mainly feminine and somewhat inaccurate
due to unfairness. However, the song is slightly more suited to a female audience
anyway, and I think the answers won’t affect my music video negatively.
7. The music industry’s audience in generally made of 14-25 year olds, which is proved
here by the age group answers. However, this may also be because my friends and
followers on the Facebook and Tumblr I advertised the survey on are generally around
my age. On the other hand, the people who answered the survey are in the age groups
most likely to watch music videos, so the results will still be beneficial to my research.
8. The results for the type of music video were almost even. As narrative scored 1 vote
higher than the others and my song choice has a clear storyline within the lyrics, I will
definitely involve a narrative aspect in my music video. I will also experiment with both
surreal and performance ideas and perhaps incorporate it in with the narrative.
9. The video, Your Song by Ellie Goulding, was done in pastel and pale colours, the
saturation decreased. This proved to be a popular choice, as it gives the video a
calming, gentle, and relaxing feeling, like many country songs. Black and white had 1
vote, and so I may experiment with making a couple of the clips monochrome.
10. 100% of my audience preferred a female main singer. This is beneficial to me as the
song I have chosen is sung by a woman, Kimya Dawson.
11. My audience seemed to not prefer the majority of the video focusing on the singer, but
instead the singer, their band, and perhaps other actors within the clips as well. This
will be good for my music video as I can show the interaction between different people
in the video, which is backed up by the lyrics which are giving opinions of each
person/animal/plant.
12. As over 57% of people that answered my survey favoured the ‘outside’ option. This fits
well with my country genre of song, and as there was 42% answers for ‘multiple
locations’ I have the freedom to get video clips from several places and surroundings
whilst still going by my audience’s opinion.
13. There was almost an even result in this question about animation, but there was a clear
favourite in having parts of the video animated. This will be interesting as I will
experiment with animation and how to get the best result.
14. And so, my music video will:
• Be suitable for mainly 11-20 year old viewers.
• Be mainly narrative, though explore with some surreal and/or
performance.
• Be in pastel-pale colours, perhaps with some black and white.
• Have a female singer.
• Show the singer, band, and other actors.
• Be set in multiple locations, but primarily outside in nature.
• Have a small section of animation.
