1. Question 4:
Who are the audience for your magazine?
The audience for my magazine are obviously going to be fans of the Indie/Alternative genre,
however – there are more in depth details which will help to distinguish my target audience even
further. I will go through each of the details and will include an explanation as to why I have chosen
this particular detail.
First of all, I shall be discussing the age of my audience.
Age is not really a hugely important factor of my magazine, because of the nature of the music.
Indie/Alternative is simplistic and meaningful. There may be some lyrics in songs which people of a
certain age may not understand, but compared to other genres such as Rap or Hip – Hop which may
have listener discretion, Indie/Alternative is a genre that is pretty much suitable for everyone to
listen to. My age group for my target audience is between 16 and onwards. There is no such thing as
a maximum age that you can like a certain genre up until. However, for main sales, my age group is
16-26. This is because this particular age group are going to be people who are at work or studying.
The fact that people of this age are working will be beneficial to us as well as them because it means
that the magazine is more affordable for them which means more sales.
Indie and Alternative music is a genre in which people can relax to and enjoy. When studying or
doing homework, I personally love to listen to music because it helps me concentrate. So when
discussing the physcographic of their lifestyle, a magazine based on a genre which is relaxing and
almost intellectual is perfect for them.
Gender is not vitally important when selling my magazine either. There are magazines out there such
as NME, which have a 68% male readership to a 32% female readership, but this can mainly come
down to the fact that the music NME talk about can be slightly more gender based or aggressive.
Having watched alternative rock bands live and clips of Indie bands at festivals – I can confidently say
that this gender is almost a perfect mix of the genders. In addition, you never really hear one genre
talk about an Indie band more than another.
The social class of my target audience are simply normal, working class people. Nobody should be
deprived of anything due to their social class. If you are a normal, working class person , then you
are able to afford most things that you want to get – meaning that basically anyone who is a fan of
the genre is able to purchase the audience.
Social habits of my target audience will include socialising with their friends, using social media and
going to concerts. The use of social media in the magazine is vitally important, because I have
created an Instagram and Twitter account for the readers to follow. Meaning they will be up to date
with everything that the magazine are doing. This means that they will feel as if they are part of a
community, which is very important because it gives a sense of identity and cohesion within the
Indie/Alternative genre and social acceptance.
