1. Question 3
What have you learnt from audience feedback?
In orderto find out what people thoughtofour music videoand their personalopinionson it, we
created a shortquestionnairethatwould enable us to gathertheir thoughtsandideas.
What genre is the music
videobest suited to?
Since the genre we hadchosen
was indie/alternative we of
course wanted tomake sure
thatthe videowe producedwas
appropriateto thatgenre, this
questionenabled usto see
whether we used ourresearch
effectively and usedthe right
techniquesand ideas to makeit
either conformto, challenge or
developthe genre. 100% of the
people thatanswered our survey said thatthe video we madewas best suited tothe genre of
indie/alternative, provingthatwhat we created was definitely somethingthatwould be identified as a
productof that genre, showingthat we musthave usedthe commonconventionsof the genre in the
correct way.
In whatways doesthe music video either conform to, challenge or develop the given
genre?
In orderto make sure thatthe video was identifiable as a videoof the indie/alternative genre, we
wanted to makesure that we used conventionsthatare often foundin othervideosof the same
genre, suchas things like a storyline or minimallip syncing. Thisquestionmeant thatwe could see if
what we hadincluded was noticed by the audience, one personsaid “dark settings, character not
lookingdirect at camera, casualclothing”, throughdoingresearch into othervideos, we foundthat
these were commonfactors andthoughtit would be appropriateto use similar features in our video,
from this it showsthat it was noticed and expected. Anotherpersonsaid “Simplistic yet meaningful,
2. was also quite alternative - the dancingetc madeit very unique”, our research showed usthat indie
videosare often ona tightbudgetso this meansthat they are keptquite simple andinclude other
thingsto make themmore effective, we thoughttobreak the videoup thatit would be beneficial to
include contemporary dance, this is a factor thatchallenges or even developsthe genre as it is very
rare tosee this within videosof this genre and by using it, it obviously madea positiveimpact onthe
audience.
Which aspects/features of the videodidyou enjoy the most?
If our videowasn’t portrayedas
enjoyable or interesting thenpeople
wouldn’twatch so we wanted to
ensure thatit includedcertain
elements that wouldmake it worth
watching. Our narrative thatwe
included was the basisof the video, it
followed the story of a boy who had
an argumentwith someone, who’s
identity is hidden, andthe fact thathe
feels guilty andwants to fix his
mistakes, within the videowe
included hintsto who the personwas and it was his mother. 80% of the people who respondedsaid
thattheir favourite element was the narrative andas producersof the videowe are very happy with
this as we intended it to be the feature thathad the biggestimpact and was paid attentiontothe
most. 40% of people saidthat boththe dance element and the songchoice was the feature that they
enjoyed most, we felt that by including dancingscenes that it would help to bothbreak up the video
andalso progressit, the scenes were in black andwhite andwe thoughtthatthiswould help to
portray the characters emotionsin a different and more physicalway, challenging the genre. From
the results it showsthat even thoughit wasn'tpeople’s favouriteaspect, thatit was somethingthat
hada positiveimpact.
UsingGoodwin’s theory, which of the below are achievedin the music video?
Goodwin’sTheory is a technique
of analysisthat we used
throughoutourresearch into
other videosof the same genre,
it enabled us to see that way in
which music videosare put
together in order to havethe
best impacton the people who
are watchingthem. To give our
video purposewe used
attemptedto use the categories
in the best way possible. The
category thatwas noticed the
mostwithin our videowas
‘Genre Conventions’ with100%
of people sayingthat it was achieved in the video. The conventionsofthe indie/alternative genre are
3. often thingslike narrativesbasedon love/relationships, very simplistic ideas andemotional scenes.
Fromthe feedback it is clear that what we included within our videowas effective and portrayedthe
genre in the right way.
80% of people said that‘Relationshipsbetween lyrics and visuals’ wasthe next mostpopularcategory
thatwas achieved in the video, showingthat we made a connection between what the artist was
sayingin his lyrics and what he meantby them, the title of the song, ‘ForYour Love’, is dominantin
the video asthe boy realises that he hasdone wrong andis willing to fix his mistakesanddo anything
for his mother’s‘love’ again.
How did the music videomake youfeel?
By lookingintoother videosof the
same genre, we foundthatthe
majority of themhad an impacton
the viewer andthat often there was
a powerful messagewithin the
video. We wantedto make sure that
our videotold a story, hence why we
hada strongandprominent
narrative behindit, butwe also
wanted to enable people to connect
with it in waysthat may not be as
obvious, inways thatonly they
knew. The mostcommonway that
people felt after watching ourvideo
was emotionalas 80% selected thisoption. The songitself and the lyrics thatare spokenwouldeasily
make it a songthat people can connect with andunderstand, andalongwith our video andthe story
thatit tells of the love between a mother andsonwould make it even more effective. 60% of people
said it was a relatable video, meaning thatthey understoodwhatwas happeningandcould relate to
the situationthatwas being shown. 40% saidit made themfeel sadand upset, since the video starts
with an argumentit is understandablethatpeoplewould feel thisway as they aren't good situations
to be in, although40% saidit was upsetting, 20% saidthat they felt positiveafter watching the video
andthis could be because of the way that the sonnotices his mistakesandreturns tofix them,
showingthe audience that thingsalways work outfor the best in the end, givingthem hopefor the
worst situations
