Professional Development Program
INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
A rights-based approach
to teaching and learning
This program is aimed at educators who believe in inclusive education
and want to improve practice so that they can optimise the growth
and personal development of each student. It covers the philosophical
underpinnings and legal reasons for inclusive education and provides the
key ingredients for a rights-based approach to teaching and learning.The
program gives educators the tools to engage in responsive education
practices and strategies to deliver inclusive education for excluded and
marginalised students.
Topics include:
»» Philosophy of education and the idea of education directed to the full
development of the human personality
»» The role of the school and the role of the educator
»» Human rights and the regulatory landscape for education
»» How to create a safe and secure place to learn
»» How to support students to stay at school
»» How to engage purposefully with children and their families, support
networks and advocates
»» System interventions to enable inclusive education – how to demand
support and hold the system to account
Brendan Murray will run the seminar and follow-up activities, ensuring
that the ‘live’ modelling of a broad repertoire of exemplary and inclusive
pedagogy is on display at all times.

Brendan Murray is the Director of Article 26 education consultants. He
is a true believer in inclusive education and a passionate proponent of rights-
based teaching and learning.
As the former Executive Principal and founder of Parkville College and former
Co-Principal and co-founder of the Pavilion School, he has inspired hundreds
of educators. He holds a Masters of Education Degree (Leadership, Policy
and Change) from Monash University and has been a Senior Policy Advisor
for the Department of Education andTraining, and a member of theVictorian
Government’s Alcohol and Drug Strategy 2013–2017 Expert Advisory Group.
