Unorthodox Jukebox Analysis: Gorilla, Tracks, and Simplicity
1. Digipak and Magazine Poster Analysis:
Unorthodox Jukebox- Bruno Mars
Front cover
In the front cover - (Right Image) we see a Gorilla playing at a Jukebox. This can be significant hence
the name of the album is ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ and also, the 3rd song on the tracklist is ‘Gorilla’ as it
can be seen in the (Left image) which is an image of the back cover of the digipak. The colours
combined throughout the whole digipak are very vast, including only shades of Red, Black and Beige,
having the Beige colour as a background making all the titles and images in red and black stand out, as
it contrasts between the light and dark. The fact that a Gorilla is included on the front cover of the
digipak also shows Bruno Mars’ style of music, which is a literal style that has the lyrics matching the
visuals. The ‘Unorthodox’ word could suggest a deviation from the Christian orthodox religion, which
gives us an idea that his album and the songs included are quite opposing to orthodox ideologies. Also,
the fact that there is a gorilla included on the front cover, can suggest that it is unorthodox because
science explains that people’s ancestors are monkeys, whereas christians say that God created
people. Therefore this can be a representation of the ‘Unorthodox’. The composition of the front cover is
central, which implies a clear focus on the subject (The Gorilla and the Jukebox) to emphasise on the
tracks of the album and also the title of the album. This makes the artist more memorable and also the
album.
Back cover
The back cover is very simple, using the same colour composition as the front cover. The numbers and
names of the tracks are centred bringing the attention to them only, which makes the viewer focus more
on what other songs are included. The font is quite small however, which would require the customers
to pick up the album in order to read the songs. The barcode, institutional logos and copyright
information are at the bottom so they are out of the way and do not get the attention away from the
song titles. The copyright information is also much smaller and less readable as it is not ‘important’ for
the audience to read. This is because they want the audience to listen to the album and not care about
2. the legal side of music. The background of the back cover is a curtain, which can suggest mystery and
therefore represent the curiosity people can have as they are not revealed everything on the CD cover.
This appeals to the audience and makes them more interested in the album so that they can indeed
see what ‘’hides behind the curtain’’.
CD analysis
The CD disk is very simplistic, including only a beige background
with the album title (Unorthodox Jukebox) in black. The artist’s
name (Bruno Mars) is also present on the CD. The simplicity of
the CD was on purpose, to emphasise on only the album’s name
and the artist, so that it remains implemented in people’s mind and
also to give the artist the credits for the songs recorded on the
album. The font is very consistent all throughout the digipak, so
that both the CD cover and the CD disk are linked to each other
and clearly are part of the same album.
Bruno Mars Poster Analysis
3. There isn’t much going on in the promotional poster. The poster includes the picture of the front cover of
the album, and a list of the tracks on the album itself. The artist's name however is positioned at the
top in bold, being the biggest text on the entire poster. This emphasises the importance of the artist and
also make him more known to the people that would have already heard about his album’s release. The
fact that the name of the album is repeated as well as the artist appeals more to the audience as it will
be easy for them to see and remember the text. The release date is also present. The promotional
poster, like the album only uses a 3 colour scheme, red, black and beige background. It is significant
because the promotional poster would make someone think back to the album, so people would
recognise it more when they see those colours. The same representations as in the front cover are
used. The background of the picture used on the poster looks quite old, as old paper with darkened
edges and beige composition of colour. This can suggest the style of the music as old, and also can
link to the very old jukebox that is in the middle of the picture.
4- Beyonce
Front cover
The front cover - (Right Image) is very simple and only includes the Artist (Beyonce) , her name and the
name of the album which is ‘4’. This shows that Beyonce is already very famous therefore everyone will
know her just by her looks, this can be shows by the fact that on the front cover, her name is placed at
the top, which is consistent in all of Beyonce’s album covers, and its half covered by the artist posing
with her hands crossed on top of her head. The artists makeup and outfit take all the attention of the
audience, as she is already well known, they do not have to see anything else, and therefore this is
more appealing than any other title or picture on the front cover, as some artists don’t appear on the
cover themselves, so this way the audience feel closer to the artist. The central position of the artist
makes her seem superior and this is also reinforced by the fact that the picture is taken from a low
viewpoint. The font used for the name of the artist is consistently used in all the artists albums. It is
very simplistic so that it can make Beyonce stand out more. Also, the background contrasts with the
text as it is a very light blue colour, which makes it stand out despite it being simple.
4. Back cover
The back cover includes a picture of Beyonce from the back, she is posing in a quite provocative way,
and her fit figure makes this stand out even more.
