1) Body short, deep and laterally compressed with rounded abdomen
2) Large cycloid scales present through the body with bluntly rounded snout
3) Mouth wide and upturned with prominent protruding lower jaw and lower jaw
consists of movable articulation at the symphysis.
4) Body colour is grayish on back and flanks, silvery-white below, fins dusky.
4. Mrigal
Identification characters:
1) Body elongated with depressed and obtusely rounded snout.
2) 2) scales are large & Cycloid type
3) Mouth is terminal and wide, lips without fringe, upper lip not continuous with lower
lip. One pair of short rostral barbles present in Mouth.
4) Caudal fin homo-cercal with deeply forked. Body colour is usually dark grey on the
back and silvery on the sides and belly.
5. Singhi(Heteropneustes fossilis)
1) The width of head is shorter than the length
2) four pairs of barbles present, the maxillary barble extends beyond the pectoral fin.
3) The fin commences in the anterior 1/3rd of the body
4) Anal and caudal fins are separated by a distinct notch.

1) The greatest width of the head equals its length.

7) The adult fish attains a length of about 32 cm
7. Anabas testudineus
1) Scales present on head, operculum and inter-opercle are strongly spinous
2) The outer row of villiform teeth injaw is the largest

anal and caudal fins also.
4) The fish attains a length of about 25cm and a weight of 160g.
5) The colour of the body is dark to pale greenish.
