Institutions:
Inception was directed by Christopher Nolan. He has also directed films such as
Interstellar, Man of Steel and The Dark Knight trilogy.
Inception was produced by Emma Thomas. The company that paid for the film to be
produced was Warner Bros. They have produced films such as The Conjuring 2, Creed, Pan
and Max.
Warner Bros. Pictures distributed the film and they have distributed the same films that
were mentioned above.
Inception made $825.5 million in the box office.
Audience:
The target audience for inception was young teens to adults due to its low rating but
complex storyline. It was made for father and son to be able to watch and become equally
confused at the same time. The age rating is a 12 which allows the target audience to watch
it without being affected.
The complex story line and immense action makes this film appealing to its target
audience as it has been able to create an amazing and fun film that is appropriate for
younger ages.
Empire says “Every scene — let alone the movie — could be punctured with that postscript
beloved of primary school story scribblers: “And I woke up and it was only a dream...” So,
don’t brace for a “ta-dah!” moment.” I agree with thisbecause despite its clever storyline
and interesting plot it still has the basic features of stories from young children that
slightly ruin the movie for some.
Genre and Conventions:
The genre of the film is Thriller. Because of this we expect and confusing, brain stimulating
plot that leaves you wondering what actually happened at the end of the movie. We also
expect action, a protagonist and an antagonist.
Nearly all the conventions from the genre are present in this film. For example, it drip
feeds you the plot making you confused, there is action, there are two sides, there is a
soundtrack.
Other films that use these conventions are Shutter Island, Seven, Taken and Gone Girl.
This film is very typical of its genre as it uses all the conventions the audience would
expect, as mentioned above, thus making it the ultimate thriller film.
Representation:
The main characters are nearly all male, the biggest character has a mental problem. The
people with these problems are portrayed as a littlebit crazy. Males are portrayed to be
great with action and women to be good with art, building and very creative.
The film is set all over the world and is in the time period of the not too distant future.
The moral message of this story is to focus on reality and not on your day dreams
otherwise you will lose your grasp on both.
