 Called Le Manoir du diable which translates
    to The devils castle
 Created by Georges Melies who was French
 Was only 2 minutes long
 This was one of the first horror films made and is still
referred to as ‘the granddaddy of all horror films.’

 It is a film with mystery, murder, death, madness, kidnap and
    insomnia.

 The film has a particularly uneasy and
disturbing feeling to it as the audience
never quite know who is sane and who
    is mad.
 In the early horror films there is only good
and bad people and not anyone who is in
    the middle.

 They are also very simple and stereotypical
like bats meaning vampires are around and
    full moons relating to werewolves.

 In 1910 silent films were very popular
among the public, ‘Frankenstein’ was one
    of the reasons for this.
 The first film to come out
    with sound was Dracula in
    1931 which added a scarier
    and more realistic effect to
    the film with added
    footsteps, creaking doors and
    louder screams.

 Later on in the 1930’s the first
    colour film came out called
    Doctor X
 This was a hugely successful film and saved
the company RKO from financial ruin.

 King Kong has
     influences from
    Jurassic park, Jason
    and the Argonauts,
     star wars and clips
    from ‘creature
    features.’
 In the 1940’s wartime horror was banned in England so was
    only popular in America.

 As much as America tried to keep themselves different from
other places in all their films they had Europe roots coming
    through.

 Wolves were popular in films and In general
which was partly influenced by Adolf Hitler
as ‘Adolf’ in old German is ‘noble wolf’
 This was a physiological thriller and its
main scare factor was what is lurking in
    the shadows.

 It contains a famous swimming pool
scene where one of the characters goes
swimming and is stalked by a cat which is only
shown by their shadow. She stays
in the pool to keep the animal
away and then calls for help. She
starts to begin she imagined it
until she sees her robe torn to
    shreds.
 The whole style and features in horror films
    changed dramatically over 10 years.
 There was less monsters and more human flesh and
human faces being linked to the baddies and scary
people. This gave a more realistic and shocking feel.
 The main audience for horror films in 1950’s was
teenagers who went to any showing just for the
thrills. The quality of production on some of the
films wasn’t great but it still had people watching
    them.
 This was the era when the outlook on sex,
    violence and homosexuality all changed.
 They decided they wanted more realistic and
    more believable horror.
 The play on humans not knowing they had
horror characteristics started. Like looking in
a mirror and realising there was something
    different about you.
 This was based on a real story which has no
also been the base of other movies like
    ‘silence of the lambs’

 The scenes and the music in
    the film are recognisable even
if you haven't seen the film.
Like the knife in the shower.
 This was a highly rated film and it only has a
small amount of music in it.

 There is a lot of blue screen
work in this film and some
    of the special effects could
    be improved on.
 Children and family started becoming the
main focus of horror films now. (The enemy is
    within)
 Kids where acting in spooky horrors and
doing bad things to their parents.
 Parents where also the psychos in the films as
    well.
Voted scariest movie of all
time in 1999 in Film magazine
 By the famous Steven Spielberg
 A truck is driven in this film and Steven never
lets the audience see the driver which adds to
    the tension.
 First film to receive over $100m
    in box office
 Now horrors start getting weirder, scarier and
    more unique with films like

 Se7en
 Jacobs ladder
 Scream
 The film final destination comes out
 A fiction plane crash when one teenager gets
killed off one by one, including scenes of
burning faces and blown up bodies.
