3. The official poster was released in December 2010, and features the son of
Josh and Renai Lambert, Dalton. The fact that he is shown to the audience on
the official poster suggests that he will be one of the main characters, and is
also the antagonist within the movie. To show this, he has a grim facial
expression and unusual looking eyes, which can signify that there is
something wrong with him. The glint in his eyes can suggest this, and also
gives off a sense that he has been possessed. However, it can also make him
look innocent. This can suggest that although he may be possessed, the
parents are trying to find a solution to help Dalton.
4. Another way of showing that he is the antagonist in the film is how they have used
low key lighting surrounding him, which gives a dark and mysterious feeling about
the character. The dark and gloomy clouds can also signify that he is the bad
character within the film, since it sets a dark mood about the character and sets the
thriller and horror genre of the film. The fact that he is wearing a red plaid shirt can
suggest many things. For one, the plaid pattern shows that he is still a child and
gives the audience a sense of personality towards the character whilst the red,
however, can mean something else. Red usually signifies danger, war and power, so
this can show that he also has a sense of danger about him. The fact that the word
'Insidious' is written in his left eye shows that he is the antagonist because it means
that he is the one that is 'proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with very harmful
effects.' This can also relate to the fact that there is a dying flower shown to the left,
which can suggest that Dalton is slowly withering away and soon, he will be gone
forever. The poster also states that it's from the makers of Saw and Paranormal
Activity, which instantly sets high expectations and hype towards the film.
5. The clip shown happens towards the end of the movie, which would be obvious
to the audience as you can see the protagonist of the film trying to solve the
issue, which can link to Todorov's Narrative theory. The clip starts off with the
protagonist, Josh Lambert, attempting to rescue his son as he is trapped by the
demon. It is clear to the audience that he has been taken because of the
shackles on his feet, and because the son looks up to where the demon is
working, suggesting that he is scared and is telling his father to hurry. This
immediately gives off a bad vibe about where they are, and you also get this
feeling because of the mise-en-scene. For example, there is low-key lighting
which sets a dark mood, and the red lighting signifies that there's danger and
suggests that the demon has more power. Also, as the camera is panning up to
where the demon is working, it is from a low camera angle which also suggests
that he is more powerful than the other two characters.
6. The props also set the mood of the scene as there happens to be a lot of
masks and puppets. The mask shown can represent the demon, as masks
are usually associated with hiding ones identity, which is relevant because
during the scene the audience do not see the demon's face full on and up-
close. During one part of the clip, they show the demons hands, which
shows the audience that he is not human. This is quite stereotypical for a
thriller/horror movie as it makes it more scary for the audience since we are
not aware of demons during day-to-day life. The puppets suggest that the
demon is in control, which also links to the red lighting, as it appears that the
demon can do whatever he wants and that no one else can stop him. The
non-diegetic music creates an eerie atmosphere, as it is quite unusual as
the audience can't understand what the music is saying and the voice is
quite muffled. Once the music stops towards the end of the clip, it is clear
that something is going to happen, so this will create suspense and tension.
They have used a high camera angle when the camera is on Dalton and
Josh because this shows that they are powerless against the demon, which
is also shown by how they have used a low camera angle when it pans to
the demon at the end.
