Market Research: Music Magazines
The purpose of carrying outthisprimary researchisto findoutwhatpeople lookforina music
magazine, intermsof style andcontent.Ialso wishtofindout a potential targetaudiencefora new
musicmagazine. Iasked10 differentpeople totake a 10 questionsurveyonSurveyMonkey.This
providedme withquantitative datawhichIcan analyse tosee whatpeople wantina music
magazine.
I beganmy surveybyaskingthe age of the people asking,I
didthisas I wantedto know if people atdifferentages
likeddifferentgenresormusic.The resultsof mysurvey
show that 90% of the people thattookthe surveywere 15-
24 yearsold.Thistold me that the majorityof the results
wouldbe influencedbythisage group.Show itwouldshow
me what mostpeople inthisage groupwouldlike. So,
whenI create mymagazine I wouldknow whatcontentsI
wouldneedtoadd, and whatgenre of music I wouldfocus
my magazine on.
The nextquestionIaddedaskedthe genderof the people
that answeredmysurvey.Myresultsshowedthat70% of the
people askedwere female;thisshowsthatmost of myother
resultswouldbe influencedbyfemale’sinterests.Although,
30% of the people askedwere male, thisshowsthatsome of
the resultswouldhave theirintereststoo.Icoulduse this
whencreatingmymusicmagazine todirectmy contentmore
towardsbothgendersto meetthe demand.
I alsoaskedhow oftenpeople readmusicmagazines.Iasked
thisas I wantedto findoutif creatinga musicmagazine would
sell.Igot mixedresultsas40% of people saidtheyreadmusic
magazinesoften,andalso40% of people didn’treadmagazines
at all.I believethatlesspeopleare readingmagazines,as
informationisavailable onthe internet,andarticles canbe
shownonline instantly,so people whoreadmagazine have to
waita week or a month, before theycan readthe articles. If I
make the magazine available online,Icouldattractmore
readers.

I thenaskedwhatgenre of musicpeople enjoyed. Iallowed
multiple choicesinthisquestion,asIknew thatsome
people mayhave amix of opinions. Iaskedthis sowhenI
create my magazine Iwill know whatcontenttoadd. 90%
of people thatansweredthissurveysaidthattheylike
Indie music,and40 % likedRock,and30% likedPop.Iwill
use these resultstohelpcreate mymagazine.Iwill direct
my magazine to include indie,popandrockmusic.
I thenaskedhow much theylistenedtothisgenre of music.I
didthisbecause Iwantedto know if they people thattook
the surveylistenedtomuchmusicat all.I now know that
60% of people listenedtothismusica lot,so I wouldknow
that these people wouldwanttoreadaboutthistype of
music.I will use thiswhenIcreate mymagazine,asI could
give awaythistype of music,as an advertisementformy
magazine,oras part of competition.
I alsoaskedhow many time people visitlive performances
each year. 50% of people thatansweredsaidthattheydo
attendat leastone performance eachyear.Icoulduse this
whencreatingmymagazine asI couldgive awayticketsto a
live performance aspartof a giveaway, orgive couponsthat
give moneyoff buyingtickets.Aswell asreportonrecent
live performancestotell peoplewhocouldmake it,how it
was.
I wantto know how people listenedtotheirmusic.I
foundoutthat 70% of people listenedtomusicthrough
videostreamingsitessuchas YouTube andVimeo,and
60% buytheirmusicthroughonline musicstoressuchas
iTunes,andGoogle Play.Icoulduse thiswhenmakingmy
musicmagazinesbyprovidingQRcodesforthe readerto
scan, whichwouldtake themtoa site such as YouTube,
or a musicstore suchas iTunes.Thiswouldallow the
readersto buythe musicfrom the magazine, aswell find
more musicthat theymighthave not knownabout.

I thenaskedwhatcontentspeople wantedinamusic
magazine.Iaskedthisas I wantedtosee whatI shouldaddto
my magazine.90% of people lookedforexclusivesin
magazines,sowhencreatingmymagazine Iwill looktowards
addingexclusive articles.40% of people alsolookfor;gifts,
posters andreviews. SoIwill addthese too,soI can satisfy
mostof the readers.40% of people wantedachance tofind
out aboutnew artists,and10% wantedarticlesabout
establishedartists,soIwouldinclude these tootogive my
magazine a large range of contents.
I alsowantedto findouthow much people are willingto
spendeachmonthof a magazine.60% of people are willing
to spendfrom£1 - £3 for a magazine eachmonth.I will use
thisinformationtomake sure thatI won’tmake my
magazine costmore than £3 to suitthe majorityof people.
Havinga magazine cost thisprice, wouldallow ittohave a
lotof content,butstill be cheapenoughforpeople tobuy.
As the average price of a monthlymusicmagazine would
cost aroundthisprice.
Finally,Iaskedhow muchpeople visitmusicstore such
as HMV. I askedthisas I consideredaddingin
competitionstowingistcardsfor these stores.The
resultsshow that40% of people don’tusuallyvisit these
stores.Thiswill influence mydecisionwhencreatingmy
magazine,whichmatchesmyotheransweredquestions
whichshowsthatmost people listentomusiconline,so
I will notaddany contentfor musicstores,inmy
magazine.

From myresearchI have foundoutthe targetaudience of mymagazine, whichwill be aimedtowardsa
youngaudience of around15- 20 years old.Ihave also foundoutthroughmy researchthatI shoulddirect
my contenttowardsbothgenders. As shownthroughmyresearch,Ihave foundout that notmany people
readmusic magazines, ascontentisavailable forfree andinstantlyonline,soIhave decidedtomake my
magazine a weeklymagazine, whichwill be available topurchase online.Myresultsshow thatthe majority
of people wouldpayupto £3 for a monthlymagazine, butbecause Ihave decidedtomake mymagazine
available online weekly,Iwill lowerthe price tomake it more affordable forthe customer.Alsobutthe
magazine will alsobe available onlinesothe online versioncouldbe cheaperasitwouldn’tneedtobe
printed.Ihave alsofoundoutwhat contentto have inmy magazine.Ihave foundoutthat the majorityof
people listentothe Indie genre of music,soIwill include articlesthat are of the Indie genre.Ihave also
foundoutthat people wantexclusiveinthe magazines.Iwill alsoprovide the chance towinticketsand/or
musicthroughcompetitions.
