Survey MonkeyReport – MusicMagazine Results
As I am creatingmyownmusicmagazine,Idecidedtoconductsome primary marketresearch to see
whatpeople wouldlikebestoutof mymagazine inexample –freebies.Icreatedanonline surveyon
surveymonkeyandposteditonsocial mediaandsentit viaemail toget myvariedresponsesfrom
10 people.
The secondquestionIaskedwasthere to findoutwhatgender
people whotookmysurveywere, the majorityof people (80%) were female,whereasonly20% of
people were male, therefore mymagazine willmainlybe aimedatwomen, withfeatureswhich
couldpossiblyattractmen,suchas advertisementsof cars,mentionof female actresses,unisex
orientatedarticlesetc.
I askedthisquestionasIwantedto know and understandthe genre
of musicthatI was aimingtowardsinmy features,therefore
decidingforme whatartistsI couldfeature,whathouse style to
developandhow toadvertise mymagazine tothe public.The
majorityof people whotookmysurveypreferredthe genreof indie
(40%) thenthe secondhighestpercentagewaspeoplewhomostly
enjoyed popmusic(30%).Due tomy resultsof thisquestionmy
magazine will mostlybe conformingtoIndie,butwithhintsand
It was importanttome to know the general age group who
tookmy surveyinorderto know what age group to aimmy
magazine at.70% of people whotookmysurveywere under
18, therefore Iwill targetmymagazine topeople under18. As
all otherage groupswere onlydone by10% each.

featuresof Pop,Rockand variousothersas 20% chose ‘other’as a favouredgenre and10%
chose rock.
One of myotherquestions relatingtomusicmagazineswas
‘How oftendo youpurchase music?’The mostcommon
answerwas‘Never’at40% of people sayingtheyneverbought
music. 30% of people didhoweversaytheypurchasedmusic
‘everysooften’meaningtheyare notreallyregular music
downloadersorbuyers,meaningthatmymagazine wouldnot
generallyfeature online musicvouchersregularlyasonly20%
buymusicweekly,Iwouldchose toinclude aspectsof my
magazine tohave discountcodesandvoucherssometimes,to
cater for a largeraudience of people.
I askedthisquestioninordertofindoutif people actuallyreadmusicmagazines.40% of people who
tookthe surveysaidtheydidinfact readmusicmagazinesbut60% of people saidtheydidn’tread
musicmagazines. Therefore Ishall have toworkevenharderto make people whousually don’tbuy
magazinestopurchase mine.
Thisquestionwaswhichmagazine of musicdoyoulike toread best,25% of people statedthatthey
preferQ,a further25% chose Kerrangas theirfavourite andthe remaining50% selected‘other’as
an option,suggestingthe people’sopinionsvary.Especiallywhenitcomestogenre of music
magazines,asQ and Kerrangare obviouslyquite differenttoeachother.SuggestingIneedadiverse
name whichcoversmanygenres.

Thisquestionwasreallyimportanttome inorderto know whatpeople wantedtosee withinthe
magazine features. The majorityof people inthis surveychose “exclusive interviews’asthe feature
theywouldmostlike tosee withinamagazine (50% of people whotookmysurveychose exclusive
interviews) The same amountof peoplechose ‘free things’and‘advertisements’astheirpreferred
choice (both20%) Finallyonly10%of people saidthattheywouldbuythe magazine forpuzzles,
therefore Iwill notinclude these withinmymagazine,Imayinclude asmall amountof free things
perissue andadvertisements,as20% of people wantedtosee thiswithinmymagazine,Iwill mainly
include exclusive interviewsinmymagazine, becausethe majorityof people wantedthat.
4. HollyLogan
Thisquestionaskedspecificallyhowmuchpeople wouldspendonamusicmagazine,thiswas
importantas I got toknowmy target betterandnow know how to aim itand how to advertise the
price. The majorityof people statedthattheywouldspend“£2.00-£2.99” on the musicmagazine per
issue,asI planmy magazine tobe a monthlyissue,as40% of those whotookmy surveysaid that
theywouldonlyspendthisamountIwill make the magazine price, inthisprice range perissue to
accommodate the audience’sneed.Onlyone personsaidtheywouldspend£5.00 on a single
monthlyissue sothereforeIwouldn’tputitat thatprice as I wantmy magazine tobe affordable.
20% of people wouldspend1.99 or underon it,and another20% wouldspend3.00 to 3.99
therefore Iwontmake itthisprice either. If mymagazine isn’taffordableitwouldn’tsell.
The final questionIaskedwashowI foundoutabout upcomingevents,80% of people selected
‘online’ astheirmostcommonsource forfindingoutaboutupcomingevents.The other20% of
people selected‘other’.Asthe majorityof people chose onlineastheirinformationsource,I shall
make sure my magazine hasonline featuresandalsoincludesinformationaboutupcomingevents
withlinkstowebsiteswhere theycanreadmore.Thisquestionwasimportanttome as I wantedto
know

Overall,mysurveyhashelpedme inunderstandingpotential readersof mymagazine andhas
helpedme indecidingwhatsortof ideasIcouldpursue. Ilearntthat I will have tomake my
magazine interestingforvariousdifferentreasonsthanIoriginallyplannedbutInow know and
understandexactlywhoIammakingthismagazine for.Alsoassome people were onlywillingto
spend£1.00-£1.99 on a monthlymagazine,Ialsohave tobe mindful of the price andpossiblytryto
make it affordable forall. Mymagazine will focusalotof online featuresasthe majorityof people
whoansweredmysurveystatedtheyreadonline sourcesforinformationonevents.Iwasgoingto
make sure my magazine includedlotsof freebiestoencourage the purchasingof the magazine but
insteadIdiscoveredfrommyresearchthatmy audience wouldpreferexclusiveinterviews.A lotof
people whowill be readingmymagazine seemtobe around18-25 therefore Ishall adaptmy
magazine tomake it appeal tomy audience.
