Empire Magazine Case Study 
The Empire magazine is a British film magazine that was first released in July 1989. The 
empire magazine is published monthly by Bauer Consumer Media. The current editor of the 
empire magazine is Mark Dinning. The empire magazine is Britain’s biggest selling film 
magazine and the magazine is also published in the Unites States, Turkey, Australia, Portugal 
and Russia. The empire magazine runs and organises an annual Empire Awards which used 
to be sponsored by Sony Ericsson but from 2009 it has been sponsored by Jameson. The 
awards are voted by the readers of the empire magazine. The empire magazine is well 
known for doing lists ranging from most represented directors to the 500 greatest movies of 
all time. The Empire magazines largest consumer is 15-24 year olds with just over 70% of the 
total consumer being male. The median age of the consumer is 30 while the total readership 
is approximately 753,000. 
Bauer Consumer Media also publish other media products and other magazines such as Q 
magazine which is also published monthly. The circulation of the empire magazine is 
approximately 145,117. Furthermore the empire magazine is the UK’s second largest 
magazine. The empire magazine is a high class film magazine as the readers are twice as 
likely to wear designer clothing. This shows that the empire magazine is a high cost 
magazine from all the glossy pages etc. This makes the readers feel more sophisticated and 
of a higher class. The social status of the empire magazine is likely to be between the lower 
middle class and the Upper middle class with the majority of the readers being middle class. 
In addition to this the audience will vary in their martial status as the audience are more 
likely to wear designer clothing so this can suggest they’re looking for a relationship or are in 
one and are trying to improve their social status. Furthermore the regionality of the readers 
will vary but the majority of the readers will live in cities as they’re able to have more access 
to purchasing the magazine and buying high social status items such as the designer clothing 
that the readers are more likely to buy. The empire magazine average reader will have a 
high disposable income and will have multiple devices/appliances that serve a similar 
purpose and use such as an Xbox and a Playstation. In addition to this the average reader 
are likely to be tech savvy’s and will buy the latest versions of products such as phones and 
tablets. 
The empire magazine relates to my magazine in multiple ways such as target audience, 
content and target gender. The empire magazine focuses on males for the target audience 
as the adverts in the magazine ranges from Hugo Boss to Jameson. In addition to this some 
of the other companies that have advertised in the empire magazine are Audi, Alberto VO5, 
Blackberry and Diesel. Also the empire magazines content is similar in genre as it contains 
reviews for films and film news whereas mine will have information on the music composed 
and used in the films and reviews on how the music and soundtracks were used in the film. 
Also the empire magazine is published monthly which will be the case for mine as it will 
allow plenty of content to be reviewed and written about. The layout and aesthetics will be
similar as the largest consumers of media products such as games, films and TV programs 
are males at the rough age of 30 however my target audience will be younger so the gaming 
content of the magazine will appeal to them. Also the front cover of my magazine will be 
simple but the main image will be high in detail to attract the target audience. 
In an issue of the empire magazine a full page display can cost roughly £8,500 and a full 
page advertorial can cost just over £10,000. The iPad app for the empire magazine has 
embedded trailers, Footage and interactive articles. It was the first Bauer brand to launch an 
iPad app. In November 2009 the empires iPhone reviews app was launched at a price of 
£2.99 and was one of the most popular Christmas downloads that year. 
The empire magazines content is primarily split up into 4 sections. The slate which is about 
the films and faces that the Empire are focused on. The in cinemas section which has 
theatrical reviews, which is a big feature that readers buy the magazine for. Also the Main 
Features section of the magazine which has details of all the big films, actors in the films and 
the directors and it also focuses on the overlooked stories from the history of the cinema. 
The final section of the magazine if the Re-View section which is about the DVD’s, Blu-Ray’s, 
soundtracks and book that have been recently released. These four sections of the empire 
magazine can draw/attract a wider range of people to the magazine that increases the 
readership and target audience of the empire magazine.
