2. in the UK there is a wide range of magazines to
choose from which cover different genres and
audiences of film. I will analysis the most popular
film magazines and understand how they are
published, their circulation and the typical audiences
that view these magazines.
3. Empire
❖ Empire is a UK film magazine who publish every month
on news, interviews, reviews and content regarding the
filming industry. Empire has some other regular
features. Each issue features a Classic Scene, a
transcript from a notable film scene. The first such
classic scene to be featured was the "I could have been
a contender" scene from On the Waterfront.
4. Empire
❖ Empire’s circulation figures from 2009 (second half of
the year) was 117,000 copies sold. In comparison to
2015 when they sold (in the second half of the year)
118,000 copies.
5. Empire
❖ Typical audience- The target audience is predominantly
middle class males, aged between 16-30. The
magazine is around £4, which is quite expensive for
your average magazine. Therefore the buyers of Empire
are more likely and tend to be a movie lovers.
❖ Empire claims not that they don’t intended to be gender
specific but sales dictate that males are the predominant
purchaser of this magazine and the adverts will reflect
this.
6. Sight and Sound
❖ Sight and sound was first established in 1932 and
publish each month. They include review films that were
released within the month. What sets this magazine
apart from others is that they post reviews on films with
a limited (art house release). Other major magazines
will only post reviews on only major films and exclude
most independent films that do not have a large public
following.
7. Sight and Sound
❖ The magazine has 13,000 UK and 6,000 international
subscribers.
8. Sight and Sound
❖ Sight and Sound’s target audience is aimed at educated and
intelligent reads of the film industry. The magazine includes
interviews and information that is only relevant to the film industry.
This means that the magazine requires the reader to have a
advanced understanding of the on goings in todays film industry.
❖ The price of the magazine is between £3-£4 which is above the
average for magazine prices. This leads me to conclude that the
types of people that buy this magazine are wealthy enough have
enough disposable income and, or are very passionate about the film
industry. Due to the high intellectual writing of this magazine, it leads
me to think the average age of readers are between 25-45 years.
