2. EMPIRE
The main movie magazine in the UK is named
Empire. It is published monthly by German media
company Bauer who purchased and overtook British
media group EMAP in 2008. Bauer manage around
over 600 magazines, with most of them revolving
around music. However, Empire now runs as one of
its most popular magazines and it is a magazine
which concentrates on film and various actors in the
entertainment business. Empire is a monthly film
magazine, originally launched in the UK in 1989, but
now is also published in the United States, Australia,
Turkey, Russia and Portugal. Their usual feature of
the magazine is to preview and review films that have
been recently released. It also features a Top 10
countdown for examples of something film-related
such as āTop 10 chase scenesā or āTop 10 intense
scenesā. They have a review section which is
dedicated to Blu-Ray and DVD platforms showing all
the latest news and latest releases. Empireās large
population of readers allow them to be able to host
their very own Empire Awards which is sponsored by
mobile phone company Sony Ericson. Empire give
their fans the chance to vote for winners at their
awards, such as Best Actor and Best Actress.
PRODUCERS & DISTRIBUTORS.
TOTAL FILM
Another large UK based film magazine is Total Film. It is
published 13 times throughout the calendar year (monthly
and one extra during the summer period) and is published
by Future Publishing. Future Publishing (also known as
Future plc.) is a media company, when in 2006, it was
ranked as the sixth-largest media corporation in the
United Kingdom. Despite its large ambition towards game
consoles, it gives Total Film as much support in its
distribution as it possibly can. A corresponding company
has now been set up in the US named Future US and
founder Chris Anderson (who founded to company in
1985 says that because of its large expanding to the US, he
expects Future plc to increase in popularity and help
produce more exciting products. Each month, Total Film
provides a range of features, from spotlight interviews
with actors and directors, to making of and on-set pieces
for new and future releases. Each issue always includes the
Total Film Interview, which is a six-page in-depth chat
with an actor or director, along with a critique of their
body of work.
3. ENTERTAINEMT WEEKLY
The final movie magazine I have researched is an
American weekly piece named Entertainment Weekly. It
is published by Time Incorporated which is the American
version of the UKās Time Inc. UK, formerly known as the
International Publishing Corporation (IPC). Time Inc.
publishes over 90 magazines which include Sports
Illustrated, InStyle, Southern Living and of course
Entertainment Weekly. Time Inc. also owns the rights
to LIFE, a well-known magazine that has been published in
many different formats. Time Inc. currently owns and
runs its website, LIFE.com, which is dedicated to news
and photography. Despite the growing expansion of Time
Inc. across different countries, they were forced to cut
500 jobs in February 2014. Entertainment Weekly features
celebrities on the cover and addresses topics such as
television ratings, movie grosses, production costs, concert
ticket sales, ad budgets, and in-depth articles about
scheduling, producers etc. It publishes several "double
issues" each year, usually being in January and one other
in the summer time which proves to delight readers
because of its growing popularity.

6. MOVIE MAGAZINE ANALYSIS X2
Banner ā a short message
describing either the character or
a feature from inside. The white
and caps locked font blends in
well with the wonderful sky
background to capture the
attention of the audience. Notice
how it also blends in well with
the red and blue which become
the three main colours and
representation of the magazine
cover which will represent
Superman well.
Main character image ā largest and
most obvious sight on the page.
Superman striking a fearless pose
while image is placed behind text.
This will catch the eyes of many
comic and marvel fans because of
Supermanās appearance. The
choice of colour and clothing
match fantastically with the sky
blue background which is very easy
on the eye of the reader.
Coverlines/buzz words ā showing
extra films that can be read about
inside the magazine. Buzzwords
such as āHotā, āBuzzā and āPlusā are
quick and snappy words which help
the flow of speech on the cover.
The differential in font colours such
as white and grey match u well with
the blue and red colours of
Supermanās cape and clothing.
Special Double Issue ā a blue
circular attachment with a short
sentence claiming what type of issue
the magazine is. Small sentences
such as make it easier for the reader
to take up information in a short
space of time.
Masthead ā red coloured natural
font. Behind the main image, the
masthead should also stand out
due to it showing the name of
the magazine. This allows the
readers to identify the magazine
as its rightful owner and makes
the more familiar with it, despite
the colours being different every
edition. The red matches well
with the colours of Supermanās
cape and with a different and
more adventurous red still
connects both together and
makes it easy on the eye and nice
to look at.
7. The red magazine title, āEmpireā
is the companies recognisable
colour which known by their
target audience, the colour red
stands out against the light blue
background again making it
instantly recognisable, this shows
that ownership is important as
people will instantly see the
āEmpireā logo which will influence
them purchasing the magazine if
they are a fan of the magazines
content.
This magazine issue is
promoting āX-Men Origins Set
World Exclusiveā, despite the
editors wanting the feature to
stand out, notice how the image
dominates the text. To make the
text stand out Empire Magazine
have made the text white to
stand out against the cover lines
which are black and grey in
colour. Like Total Film, this
magazine have coordinated their
colour scheme relying on the
film they are promoting, the
headline is white
which coincides with the white
vest worn by Wolverine, it also
goes with the clouds in the
background. Using this technique
makes the magazine look
professional, consistent and
dedicated to the film they are
promoting.
The photo used is of famous actor
Hugh Jackman who is the protagonist
of the film. This long shot makes the
audience familiar with his character, it
also gives the audience a
representation of the entire character.
The audience can see his muscular
stance, his iconic blades from the
familiar X-men series as well as who
the actor is. The image is a long shot
however the camera is tilted slightly
from below (low shot) which gives
power to the character which makes
the image the dominating factor of
the magazine cover. The background
of the magazine also uses special
effects which demonstrates the high
quality of the film as well
as reflecting the quality of the
magazine, these aspects attempt to
impress the target audience making it
appeal to them.
This magazine also uses buzz words such as āexclusiveā āspecialā āstarringā āmassiveā and āfirstā to
entice the audience and again, make them excited about the film and the content of the magazine.
Researching and analysing the codes and conventions of existing film magazine covers has shown me
what I need to include in my own magazine cover, I found that there was a lack of horror films
featured on the front cover of a film magazines therefore I will challenge this concept by promoting
a horror film on a cover, I will still use existing conventions so that the style is recognisable to the
target audience. I have also learnt that the feature article is very important when promoting a film
therefore I plan to make my image interesting, appeal and stand out.
