Editor's Notes

  • #3 Spirochetes - gram-negative, helical bacteria that move by means of axial filaments (endoflagella).
  • #4 Congenital syphilis can cause abnormalities or even death to the child Treated with Erythromycin
  • #6 Sores appear on genitals and mouth. Even without treatment they heal without a scar within six weeks.
  • #7 The secondary stage These symptoms usually disappear within 24 hours.
  • #8 Latent syphilis Transmission still possible Tertiary syphilis can result in paralysis, blindness, dementia, deafness, impotence, and even death if it's not treated.
  • #9 Alergic? penicillin, tetracycline, doxycycline can be given instead. If treated too late, there may be permanent damage to the heart and brain even after the infection is destroyed.
