Definition of Tragedy
• “Tragedy then is an
imitation of an action that is serious, complete
and a certain magnitude, in a language
embellished with a each kind of artistic
ornament , the several kinds being found in
separate parts of the play ; in the form of
action , not of narrative though pity and
fear effecting the proper purgation – Catharsis
of those and similar emotion.
Definition of Epic
Epic is a long narrative
poem written in elevated style,inwhich Heroes
of great historical or legendery importance
perform various deeds. The setting is a vast
in scope , conveying great nation , the world ,
or the universe ,and the action is imopotant
to the history of a nation or people. The
“Iliad” and The “Odyseey” and The “
Aeneid” are some great Epics.
Diffrences of Epic and Tragedy
1) The first diffences that matter is that length .
Tragedy is more concentrated and compact . Its size
is much more limited than that of Epic.The length
of epic can be greater than the epic.
2) Tragedy can make use of greater variety of Metre,
While the epic has a content itself with the
Heroic Metre.
3) The Epic uses the mode of narattive , and The
Tragedy the modes of the dramtic.
4)The Epic allows multipicity of stories which would
be unremarkable in Tragedy.
Tragedy is superior to Epic
 The imperfect and perfect is shown most
clearly between Tragedy and Epic.
 Aristotle say that Tragedy is Superior to Epic
because of funcation.
 Aristotle does not expressly say what the
function of Epic is, What the function of Tragedy
is that Epic is contained in Tragedy.
There is more unity in Tragedy , as evidenced by
the fact that a number of tragedies can be
extracted from one epic poem.
 Tragedy is richer in its effects , adding music and
spectacle to epic resources .
Its present stories even when read no less
stories vividly than the epic.It has stricter unity
and its methods more concentrated , and it
produces more effectively requisite to emotion
result ,i,.e The pleasure arising from Catharsis
of Pity and Fear.
The major differences between Two “Method”
Tragedy attains the same ends as epic , but it is
more direct and fashion, and it has claim to be
recongnized as the higher of two kinds.
