search engine is a searchable database of Internet
files
In essence, a search engine consists of three
components:
Spider: Program that traverses the Web from link to
link, identifying and reading pages
Index: Database containing a copy of each Web
page or other file gathered by the spider
Search and retrieval mechanism: Technology that
enables you to search the index and that returns
results in a relevancy-ranked order

Subject Search = Controlled Vocabulary
Trying to find all the variations and synonyms for
your keywords can be frustrating and time
consuming.
Many databases offer an alternative
known as “ Subject Searching” .
Doing subject searches is a precise and effective
way to look for materials on any given topic.

32. ERIC أضخم المواقع المتخصصة في التعليم
32
ERIC has a standardized list, or controlled
vocabulary, of education-related terms
called Descriptors
Maintained in the Thesaurus of ERIC.
ERIC uses Descriptors to organize materials
in the ERIC Collection by subject.
Using Descriptors in your search can help
you locate materials of greater relevance to
your topic.
Dr. Ahmed-Refat [ SlideShare.net/AhmedRefat ]
33. Subject Searching ERIC
33
Use Descriptors to focus the search on your
primary subject, not the mere appearance of a
word in the bibliographic record.
For example, literacy may be mentioned in the record, but the focus of the
material may be a different topic entirely. Notice the different results
attained when searching the term literacy, first as keyword and then as
Descriptor:
Dr. Ahmed-Refat [ SlideShare.net/AhmedRefat ]
35. ERIC Thesaurus
35
The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors
(Thesaurus) is a controlled vocabulary - -
a carefully selected list of education-
related subject headings.
Searching by Descriptors involves
selecting relevant terms from this
controlled vocabulary to locate
information on your topic.
Dr. Ahmed-Refat [ SlideShare.net/AhmedRefat ]
36. Keyword vs. Descriptor Searching
36
Searching by keywords matches the
exact words found in a record,
whether or not they are used in the
same context as your topic, while
searching by Descriptors allows you
to locate records by subject,
regardless of the terminology the
author may have used.

47. 3- Keyword Searching 47
A keyword search looks for words anywhere in the
record. It allows you to use your own words, rather
than the controlled vocabulary (i.e. subject heading)
that a particular database uses.
The main disadvantage of keyword searches is that
your search term may be found out of context.

preparing a query is not providing enough keywords

information you are seeking.
Thus, a central task in query formulation is for you
to identify a sufficient number of
appropriate keywords.

Stop words are words that many search engines
DON'T stop for when searching texts and titles on
the web. In fact, in order to cut down on response
time, these engines routinely ignore stop words, i.e.,
small and common words, such as parts of speech
(adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, or forms of "to
be"). Examples include: a, about, an, and, are, as,
at, be, by, from, how, i, in, is, it, of, on, or, that, the,
this, to, we, what, when, where, which, with, etc.

These common words are referred to as “stoplist”
words: they are essential to the connecting tissue in
language, but they are filler in any search request.
All search engines ignore them because they have
minimal information value and are found commonly
in all language. Search services may include on the
order of 600 of these common words in their
“stoplists”; if you use them in a query they are
ignored.
Therefore, you should ignore them as well.

For, example, take the concept of
“fast”. A thesaurus will give 75
or more different words for fast.

113. Query Term Refinements: technical terms
113
Finding the “right” terms or phrases in formulating a
query can be quite tricky.
There are sometimes technical terms or terms of art
in a given domain that us, as lay people, may not be
aware of. For example, a concern over “bone loss”
or “calcium deficiency” may result in documents
that more precisely define the condition as
osteoporesis.

115. PITFALLS TO AVOID: Alternate Spellings
115
There are perhaps 50 countries around the world whose
English is traditional, and not based on usage and
spelling in the United States.
As a searcher, you should be aware that many common
terms – colour/color, organise/organize,
behaviour/behavior – may differ in spelling between
these two forms.
If you suspect that a keyword in your queries may have
alternate spellings, we advise you to treat these
alternates in the same way you handle synonyms: list
both forms in an OR Boolean expression.

The Central Role of Your Queries
Your ability to find the information you seek on the
Internet is a function of how precise your queries are
and how effectively you use search services.
Poor queries return poor results; good queries return
great results
Query: A search request. A combination of words
and symbols that define the information that the user
is seeking

142. Anatomy of a URL
142
Anatomy of a URL
Every file on the Internet, no matter what its protocol, has a unique URL.
Each URL points to a specific file located in a specific directory on the host
machine. This is the format of a URL:
protocol://host/path/filename
For example, this is a URL from the site of the U.S. Senate of a live video
stream sent by a camera pointed at the U.S. Capitol:
http://www.senate.gov/general/capcam.htm
This URL is typical of addresses hosted in domains in the United States.
The structure of this URL is shown below.
Protocol: http
Host computer name: www
Second-level domain name: senate
Top-level domain name: gov
Directory name: general
File name: capcam.htm

TITLE SEARCHING
Searching for a keyword in the title field, rather than
as a keyword alone, will very likely produce more
relevant responses.

144. DOMAIN SEARCHING
144
If you are seeking information from a particular kind of
site, you may choose to limit your field search to one of
the current top level domains
edu -- educational site
com -- commercial business site
gov -- U.S. governmental/non-military site
mil -- U.S. military sites and agencies
net -- networks, internet service providers,
organizations
org -- U.S. non-profit organizations and others

HOST (OR SITE) SEARCHING
If you are seeking information that resides on a
specific computer or server, you can narrow your
search with a "host" or "site" query.
EXAMPLE: host:www.sc.edu

URL SEARCHING
If you are seeking a specific file, and that file's name
is part of the host site's URL, you may find it more
quickly by choosing a URL search.
EXAMPLE: url:bck2skol

LINK SEARCHING
If you have a web page and would like to know who
is linking to it, or if you would like to see who is
linking to a particular page of interest, you may
choose a LINK search.
EXAMPLE: link:www.sc.edu/beau
fort/

IMAGE SEARCHING
If you want to find a particular image on the web, you
may choose an IMAGE search. You will need to
specify the image by name, which works well if the
name is part of the image file name. If not, you may
miss that particular image altogether.
EXAMPLE: IMAGE:bones.gif

152. نصائح
1. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) signs in front of words to
152
force their inclusion and/or exclusion in searches.
2. Use double quotation marks (" ") around phrases to
ensure they are searched exactly as is, with the words
side by side in the same order.
3. Put your most important keywords first in the string.
4. Type keywords and phrases in lower case to find both
lower and upper case versions. Typing capital letters
will usually return only an exact
5. Use truncation (or stemming) and wildcards (e.g., *) to
look for variations in spelling and word form.
6. Combine phrases with keywords, using the double
quotes and the plus (+) and/or minus (-) signs.
7. don't use known stop words in your search statement.

154. Optimum Size of Query
154
Avoid the 1.5 keyword trap for your queries and be
more expansive, but
Limit the key concepts (e.g., Boolean expressions)
to three or fewer; under rare occasions this
guideline can increase to four
Keep the actual terms in your queries to no more
than six to eight.
Dr. Ahmed-Refat [ SlideShare.net/AhmedRefat ]
155. نصائح
155
Add another concept with AND logic
Use vocabulary that is specific to your topic, e.g.,
"Honda" rather than "cars"
Narrow your search to various fields, for example,
words in the title, date, site, etc., easy to do on an
advanced search page
Use the Boolean NOT to keep out pages containing
words you don't want
Dr. Ahmed-Refat [ SlideShare.net/AhmedRefat ]
156. نصائح
156
If your search results look too narrow or limited
for what you want, try these techniques:
Drop off the least important concept(s) to broaden
your subject
Use more general vocabulary
Add alternate terms or spellings for individual
concepts and connect with the Boolean OR
Don't use field searching

1- التعرف علي موضوع البحث ومجاله او نطاقه Scope - Topic
2- تحليل الموضوع الواحد الي عدة عناصر مستقلة Concepts

A successful Internet search can take several tries. But
remember: it's estimated that there are more than
1000 000 000 documents online - with no master system
for organizing this information!
No wonder effective searches take
knowhow, patience and creativity.
