1. Unit 4 pre-production:
Corporate finance
Companies that makes big budget movies have finance in place, they reinvest profits
from earlier productions such as mission impossible this is a good example of a
successful productions they are run by paramount and the starting of the film wouldn’t
of been run on borrowed money as paramount can afford to take a loss on a filmif it
isn’t successful however mission impossible was a hit and has since released 5 films
since the first in 1996.
Marvel studios/ Disney have a solid financial base and they spend their money on
more film production – so Avengers: endgame is produced by marvel studios (owned by
Disney) and distributed by Walt Disney, these films are widely received around the world
due to the popularity of Disney and the Avengers series carrying the name of this helps
push branding and encourages people to watch as they know it will be a big budget
production to make it an entertaining performance.
Distribution rights
DNA films made Danny Boyle’s 28 days later’. They sold the distribution rights (all
rights worldwide in all formats – cinema/ DVD/ tv etc) to 20th
Century Fox and used the
fees from that sale to fund production.
Sponsorship
Lots of UK television shows have corporate sponsorship (except on the BBC which is
non-commercial) so Compare the market sponsors coronation street also has deals with
cinemas offering 2 for 1 ticket deals and months' worth of free cinema when you sign
up.
Product placement
Happens on TV, Jamie Oliver 15/30-minutemeals- uncle bens pre- cooked rice / Yeo
Valle low fat natural yoghurt. They appear in lots of his recipes across his TV shows.
Happens in films- genral motors in the transformer movies, twinkes in Zombieland,
Rolex and Heineken in the bond movies.
Franchising
Lots of examples of films doing merchandise tie-tins with fast food companies but
also with you and game production for example in a happy meal from Mcdonalds you
may get a small toy that is a figure from a film that is trending in local cinemas.
Crowdfunding
Using online sites like ‘Kickstarter’ to raise money from individuals- not investors
as investors hope to get their money back where as individuals usually give their money
as gifts.
Veronica Mars- the tv show was cancelled- the Kickstarter campaign raised enough
money to make a film this then raised money for the show to pay off any debts they may
have had.
Private financing
This might mean going and borrowing money from a bank using a loan or it could
mean scrimping and saving yourself and maxing out credit cards in order to raise money
for a finance.
Public finance
A small number of films are made by public bodies- BBC films, channel 4, which owns
film 4, also receives some public finance.
2. This might also include British movies made with money from the BFI or from the
National lottery.
