2. Pricing
I decided to price my magazine at £2.99 an issue (monthly). This is to
appeal to my target audience as my magazine is aimed at 16-24 (students)
who don’t usually have much money and want to rely on spending money
and getting a good product in return.
3. Name Of Magazine
I decided to name my magazine “Camp Flog Gnaw” in homage to the LA
based alternative hip-hop festival that takes place years, as this is the
genre of magazine I have chosen to produce. The place “Camp Flog Gnaw”
is also mentioned in various odd future members songs, including a Tyler
the creator song title camp flog gnaw.
4. Rationale
The main aims of the magazine are:
To produce news on small and large alternative hip-hop artists monthly for
a decent price.
To produce a high quality product that delivers style and news cheap
enough for a student to buy every issue.
To engage with the reader and make them feel immersed in the world of
the music industry.
5. Frequency of publication
I decided to make my magazine a monthly release, with lots of news,
fashion segments and regular occurrences. I did this because it would
allow a student to buy every single issue as it would only set them back
£29.88 a year to get all 12 issues. It also allows for relevant topics to stay in
circulation and keeps the reader interested. It would also rouse excitement
in followers of the magazine as they would be less frequent but of a higher
quality.
6. Distribution
For my main distribution company I will use “Time Inc. UK”, as they
distribute NME magazine already, making it easier to reach my target
audience as all the boundaries are already set there for me to be able to
reach my demographic with my magazine. My aim would be to have my
magazine sold in supermarkets, clothes stores, and skating shops, as these
are the places I believe my demographic to be most active.
7. Positioning statement and featured
content.
My positioning statement is “for your fix of alternative hip-hop”, I decided
to use this as it directly engages with the audience as well as telling them
exactly what they are going to get if they purchase the magazine, a fix of
alternative hip-hop news. For featured content I decided to use a wide
range of hip-hop artists and search their relevancy of things going on in
their lives (for example drakes recent release of more life)
8. Regular content
In regular content, the stuff will be more relatable to the reader, for
example fashion tips and interviews with smaller artists. It will also have
things like album and single of the month, discount codes for clothing and
music, and competitions.
9. Layout style and colour
I am going to have a basic magazine design similar to many magazine
seen. Logo and masthead in the top left, barcode in the bottom right, artist
slightly offset favouring the left side, articles surrounding them. The
contents will also be similar to a normal one, regular and features on one
side, and page fillers on the other with a picture filling the gap in-between.
For my double page spread I will have the artist on the right side of the
page and the article on the left. All text will follow a white, black and light
blue theme, this fits in with the style of my genre because many items of
clothing that odd future produce are a pastel or a light blue. I will have
large bold text on all titles, sans for subtitles and serif for articles and
smaller to read things like the double page spread story.
