Bladerunner 2049 / Seven Trailer analysis
1.
2.
3. Throughout the trailer, the cinematography has a
few reoccurring themes. Lots of rain, the protagonists are
often seen in the same outfits. But the most apparent one to
me was the bright/neon colours on a dark background, as if
the director is trying to drag our eyes towards it and make us
notice it, I think it is especially powerful in this trailer though
as it helps the audience understand which way the narrative is
heading.
4. The editing is done rather conventionally in this trailer, a wide variety of shots has been used and the editing
is very neat and traditional to a thriller trailer. There are a few cases of cuts to black in the trailer, or very quick
cuts to black showing a video as almost stop motion. This provokes excitement in the audience and created
an exciting and mysterious feel to the trailer. The editor also used many close ups of Brad Pitt and Morgan
Freeman, this will have been done to remind the audience of the star roles in the trailer.
5. Tonally, the film is so easy to visualise as a thriller. The mix of dark visuals and narrative really pushes a dark
and tense narrative. The tone Fincher tried to present was very obvious through the use of mise-en-scene
and cinematography.
- Voice Over
- Choppy and quick editing
- Use of slight hints in narative to
push the trailer forwars
- Dark Visuals
7. All the way through the trailer is littered with reoccurring themes There is
wide use of the classic Bladerunner pistol, this gives fans of the original
some connection instantly to the film. There is also lots of use of the
colours yellow and pink (in massive contrast to the blues and greens of the
original film). This gives the film a nice aesthetic and looks very appealing
to the audience, they are also two colours you wouldn’t exactly expect to
see in a thriller, but does give a good effect to the trailer.
8. The trailer is quite against the grain in terms of its not as quickly edited
as an average normal trailer, which I personally enjoy more and think I
will try to go for over a quickly edited piece. I think this because it helps
the messages I hope to present get over to a wider audience easier
whilst allowing me to dwell on certain parts of the trailer more
9. The film was obviously trying to explore similar tones to the original film. The tone was set through this
films exciting use of visuals and mix of narrative peaks and troughs, and lots of obvious three dimensional
character moral dilemmas. The trailer also plays out much slower than conventional thriller trailers, this sets
the bar for the pacing in the exceptionally long final cut of the film, this trailer lays out everything the
audience needs to know before settling down to watch it.
