2. CONVENTIONS USED TO ATTRACT MY AUDIENCE
MASTHEAD:
Existing magazines – VIBE, XXL
My constructed magazine
In order to attract my audience, I used a large mast head. In
comparison to existing magazines, I have centred my mast
head at the top of the page and used capital letters and
thick bold writing for my target audience to draw attention
to the masthead and name of the magazine. However,
rather than centring the whole of my masthead, I split the
masthead into two lines and positioned the second line not
inline with the first to add uniqueness to my magazine.
To improve the attractiveness of my magazine, I could have
used a different font and made the text a lot more bolder to
draw more attention and attract my target audience to read
the magazine.
3. SELL LINES - ARTIST NAMES
I have conformed to the convention of using artist names on the
side of my magazine front cover to inform the audience of
featuring artists in the magazine. This technique is often used by
existing magazine companies to attract the audience into reading
and finding out more about the featuring artists that they may be
interested in. The style of the sell lines are often written in capital
letters and differentiate from either bold to regular style font
which I have applied on my magazine from other magazines.
However, to attract my audience even more, I could have added
more sell lines of other music artists or made my font even larger
and bolder using a different font.

4. MY USP:
I believe that my USP is the incorporation of the name of the magazine – “The Flash” and
combining the aspect of “The Flash” into forming a logo and using symbols associated with
the name of the magazine. The reoccurring theme of “The Flash” was applied in my
magazine throughout for example on the contents page, double page spread and front
cover. The use of using a symbol and logo reinforces the name of the magazine and often
can act like a reminder to the audience that they are reading “The Flash” magazine, this is a
good idea because by having a logo or symbol being used often it can raise easy recognition
and popularity just by the logo or symbols used.
5. TECHNQIUES USED TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY AUDIENCE
USE OF MODEL: I used a young, female model to reflect on my target audience and for my audience to relate the age
range of the magazine and the content of the music magazine. I also used young models throughout my magazine to
emphasises the youthfulness theme of the magazine.
USE OF LAYOUT DESIGN: I used a fairly easy and readable layout design so my audience are able to read the magazine
properly. I also allocated certain text into certain places on my magazine because from market research, the audience
are likely to be drawn to things written in the middle in bold and colourful writing. I also used capital letters in my
magazine to give the
USE OF PROPS/COSTUME: In my magazine, I got the models to wear urban styled clothing in relation to hip hop
music to make my magazine fit into the genre of hip hop/RnB music. On my contents page, the model is seen pointing
a gun. This gun represents the stereotypes surrounded by hip hop music, I also used a gun to conform to the props
normally used by other existing magazines to also make my magazine fit into the genre of hip hop.
USE OF COLOURS: My main colour theme used on my magazine are red, white, yellow, orange. This colour scheme
also conformed to the existing music magazines such as VIBE, XXL and The Source because many hip hop/RnB music
magazines use the colour red and white. The colour red, in particular, is a very loud and eye-catching colour which I
used to attract my audience especially by using it on the front cover. The colour red also has significance because it
connotes the violence and crime which is incorporated into hip hop music.
