How magazines develop and challenge conventions
1. Q1- IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR
MAGAZINE USE, DEVELOP AND
CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS.
2. USE – FRONT COVER
From the two examples presented I used many traits of hip-hop magazines in
producing the front cover for my magazine. I firstly put my logo in the top left
hand corner of the magazine. This is because this is where I saw it on most
magazines I looked at. For the subtitles around the artists on my magazine I
followed this Lupe Fiasco cover from XXL, I used large bold text with the same
text in smaller below it to give context to the subtitles. I also layered the artist
above the text to keep the artist in the centre fold on the cover. I also put the
bar code and price in the bottom right corner like in XXL magazine. I also kept
my artist looking emotionless and cold to conform to the stereotypical hip-
hop artist.
3. USE – DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I used the standard a3 format for creating my double page spread.
I also followed these two magazines by putting my artist on one
side of the page, and had the article on the other. I also went
down, then left to right on both articles, meaning you read both
columns vertically, not horizontally. I also included a logo in mine
just as the other two have. There is also a small subtitle adding
context to the articles in both, which I also did, to make the article
easier to understand.
4. USE – CONTENTS PAGE
I used the same concept of adding the “contents page” text
on to specify that it is a contents page. I also used a features
column on the left side of the magazine. I also added my
magazines logo into the contents page. I’ve also put the
subtitles on a white background and used multiple font
sizes to draw the readers to more important parts of
information and things I want them to see more than the
rest of it. I also have a recognizable item or small detail in
mine to reference the genre.
5. DEVELOP – FRONT COVER.
I took the idea of putting some text into boxes and put it all into
boxes, I think the catches the readers attention more. I also took
the idea of two tone from the bottom magazine and did it too
all, this helps to highlight more important information and put it
to the fore-front of the reader. I also moved the artist names
and put them up next to the masthead of the magazine, I think
this also directs the readers attention more towards the artists
name. I also added a price to the barcode.
6. DEVELOP – DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I moves the artist on to the right side of the double page
spread rather than the left. I think this brings the readers
attention more towards the actual article rather than a
picture of the artist. I also highlighted important parts of
the article in a different colour rather than just making it
bold. I think this brings the readers attention to it better
rather than it being very similar just a little thicker. I also
made the pull-out quotes larger and added a different
font to key words, I think this attracts more interest to
more important parts of the article rather than it only
being slightly larger than the rest of it.
7. DEVELOP – CONTENTS PAGE
I used multiple extra images on my double page spread. I
also added a regulars section as well as features. I also
has my artist stand back-facing the camera but looking
over his shoulder at it to highlight the more important
part of his jacket. I also added social media outlet names,
a website and a small section explaining an online
subscription option to the reader.
8. CHALLENGE – FRONT COVER
I have challenged the hip-hop genre in many
ways in my magazine, I used light pastel
colours when hip-hop would normally use
black and gold. I also dressed my cover artist
in white. I also have a pink logo made from
donuts which you wouldn’t normally see in a
hip-hop magazine. I’ve done this because it
better fits in with my genre and the idea that
the genres style is to be different from what is
normal, this is why I changed all the colours
on the front cover, to suggest rebellion
against the norm.
9. CHALLENGE – DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
I out the artist on the right side of the page
instead of the left. I also had the artist
dressed in clothes that aren’t traditionally
hip-hop. I also used blue instead of golds,
blacks and red. I also have a pull-out quote
about standing out and not fitting in to the
box the hip-hop genre would shove you into.
I’ve done this to further show the idea that
this isn’t a hip-hop magazine but is in fact a
alternative hip-hop magazine where going
against the norm is the norm.
10. CHALLENGE – CONTENTS PAGE
Unlike the two other magazines I have
the artist going over the middle of the
page. I also followed the pastel and
lighter colours again, as well as having
the artist looking over his shoulder at
the camera. I have once again done all
of this to show the idea of rebellion
against conformity and being the same
as everyone else, it helps show how
individual and different the magazine
wants to be.
